Coverage - 10 / 10

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage and Premier coverage. While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances. In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions. Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 8 / 10

Annual premiums with First American can range from $288 to $468, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry. The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing. For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

First American has some of the most affordable service call fees in the industry, which range from $50 to $65, depending on the plan selected. The company also offers a vast network of pre-screened contractors and technicians, as well as a 24/7 claims department. They are the worst. If you want to spend your life on hold and still get nothing this is the company for you. I have been fighting with them for 40 days about replacing a dishwasher and all I get is alot of arguments about why they can't replace the same dishwasher I have when they have already agreed to replace my 2 year old dishwasher that is still made and available. If your realtor is going to pay for your Warranty plan as a gift for giving them business, make sure it's not First American.

FAHW will leave you on hold for 30-50 minutes, then you will speak to someone you cannot understand, or who does not understand you. I used their Messaging system to try to expedite the claim information and it took 5 days to get a response. Service technician showed up on the wrong day, and when they did show up on the day we had the appointment, they were over 30 minutes late, beyond the 3 hour window. Then, they claim some items are not covered, after already having 2 Customer Service reps at FAHW tell me they were. Bait and Switch! Called again, on hold 47 minutes and after explaining to the agent I asked to be transferred to a Supervisor....on hold 15 more minutes and then... Read More

This is a horrible company! Don't use them. I had them for 2 years and had filed 4 claims with them. Either they would make an excuse about it being not covered or the contractor wouldn't show up and perform the service. Worst customer service I've ever dealt with

I have been a customer of First American Home Warranty for years and have insured up to 4 properties at a time. I have never had any issues with them until this year. I can only think that there has been some kind of ownership or management change because the service is HORRIBLE!!! Notice the caps. I have a property that has been insured with them since I purchased it in 2012. This year in Feb I submitted a claim for a plumbing problem. They said it was not covered and denied the claim. I paid another co. to do the work and sent the bill to FAHW and after some running around they refunded the entire amount to me. In June I submitted a claim for the same property for the ac and ducting.... Read More

We have used First American Home Warranty since we bought this house in 2004. It was included in the purchase the first year, then we continued to pay each year. Overall we e found it a good value. We've had one full a/c unit replaced and the evaporator coil on the other unit. We've had both water heaters replaced as well as two front load washers that could not be repaired and a dishwasher. We've also had minor plumbing and electrical problems repaired. The only claim we were denied was a lever on our built in oven that locks the door for the self cleaning oven to function. That was ok, we still can use the oven and manually clean it. However, it is important to understand that... Read More

This company rarely answers the phone, places customers on hold for extensive amounts of time and then disconnects the call. They are not fast to aid any customer with any issues and take excessive time to address needs. Additionally the contractors they use are regularly rated as some of the worst in the industry. Their lack of customer support and service make their rating horrible!

I had one of the worst experiences I have ever had working with this company. I had two rental properties that I used First American Home Warranty to cover for over 13 years. I had a problem with a leaky toilet in one of my units. My tenant reported the issue on January 22, 2016 at which time arrangements were made to have First American's approved contractor come out to evaluate the issue. It was determined at that time that the toilet needed to be replaced. There was no indication of any other damages that needed attention(Floor or Drywall damage). First American never followed up or set up a time and date to replace the toilet. After numerous phone calls(averaging 1 hour wait... Read More

Their service techs "up sell" services which they know are not covered in the warranty. Then they refuse to do the covered work until you pay the extra money to do the uncovered "up sell" work first. Classic "bait-n-switch" consumer fraud. TOTAL RIP-OFF. I paid the $65 service call before the tech would do anything. Once I paid the $65, he demanded I pay an additional $150 "cleaning fee" before he would do anything more. So basically I wasted $65 and then got blackmailed for another $150 cleaning fee before he would start diagnosing the ELECTRICAL problem. Their service tech also tried to tell me there was no Freon in my AC unit. THAT WAS A TOTAL LIE, and an attempt to sell me... Read More

My husband filed a claim on 6/21/16 that our air conditioner has stopped working. It has been two weeks since the original claim was placed and I have not received even a timeline on when our air conditioner will be fixed. Temperatures have exceeded 90 degrees multiple days during these 2 weeks, which threatened the safety of my dog. On 6/22/16 the contractor came out for about 5 minutes and said he had to talk to First American Home Buyers Protection Corporation to see what they would like to do. The contractor reported to me that he filed the report on 6/23/16. A representative lied to my husband during phone conversations on 6/24/16 and 6/26/16 stating the report was not filed yet....
