Coverage Options - 4.5 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.5 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

The company also offers a vast network of pre-screened contractors and technicians, as well as a 24/7 claims department.

Although their service offer is similar to that some competitors, it must be noted that First American contracts are short and easy to understand, which is another feature that potential clients will surely appreciate.

I would not recommend using your plan, I had their coverage for 5 years, had several claims in the last year, and got a letter informing me that they would not renew my policy. they covered the items under the claim, but just would not renew

I cancelled my home warranty with First American due to the overseas customer service. I had trouble everytime I had a claim with understanding the person. I was taking to. They read from a script and do not deviate. This leaves one wondering if they even hear you. The last straw was when I asked for a supervisor. He was very rude, in another country and laughed at me. He was frustrated and asked me to hold. I put my phone on speaker and waited over an hour. Working in a call center I knew he was not allowed to disconnect. He never came back and the line was eventually disconnected on the other end. I called back the next day and hit prompts until I was able to get... Read More

Submitted a request to them about my A/C 4 days ago and haven't heard anything from them. Will be looking for a new company. I DON'T recommend them.

This company has been a GREAT disappointment. I live in Florida and have been without AC for over a week in the middle of June. The temperature in my house has been 84-87 and it is simply unbearable. Their resolution thus far has been for me to purchase a portable AC unit and they will eventually reimburse $100 of the cost (the unit cost $400). The repair company they sent is also a JOKE - they have had their BBB affiliation revoke and have nothing but bad reviews, yet First American sends them to "fix" my unit - I am sure they were simply the cheapest bid and I wonder why????? Bottom line is we keep getting the run around and being thanked for our patience.. Also, when I... Read More

I've made a claim about my ac. The tech says its an old unit and I am to expect it not to cool (currently it's 80 in my home and ac is 'running ') he further says they will not cover replacing it? I'm waiting for an explanation.

I had a problem with my heating system in that I could not control the heat in a bedroom. I called First American Home Warranty and explained my problem. The agent told me he thought it would be covered so I agreed to have their service rep come to diagnose the problem for $75. The service rep thought it would be covered. I waited two weeks before hearing from First American that my warranty did not cover zone controllers so I just wasted $75. Very disappointing.

Debra W McLean, VA We had them for years but they got worse over time until we got tired of arguing with them over what was covered and the quality of technicians. I complained about Rush Cos. But they kept sending them. Any technician who comes to the door with a clipboard and not a tool bag is already going to lie about your problem so they can make more money. Plus they don't cover replacement of high end appliances and only $250 on the repair. Not worth the headache!

First American was my first experience with a home warranty company. While I was a bit naive about home warranty companies, I was most pleasantly pleased and happy with the service I have received. While not all of their contractors are top notch their staff has always provided first class top notch service. I HIGHLY recommend them, with all the horror stories I have heard and experienced as a renter I confident that the great quality customer service I have experienced is the companies norm and not the exception.

These guys are great...unless you need to make a claim with them and then they're worthless. We were in our home 2 days and the disposal started leaking water through the bottom of it which of course means it's history. I didn't have any paperwork from FAHW yet so I went and bought a new disposal for bout $270 and installed it myself, saving them the labor charge. I submitted the claim after the fact and they want to pay $107. I asked the agent to put me through to his supervisor and he said he was the supervisor. I guess the hourly call center agents call themselves supervisors now. So I asked to speak to his boss and he wouldn't put me through. My advice would be to steer clear of... Read More

Not happy with this company at all. We had our washer go out. Called for service. The technician came late. Now it's taking two weeks to get my washer fixed. I complained to First American Home Warranty to find out if we can be assigned to someone else. They will not change suppliers. We are stuck. Sure they have the promise to replace old items if they cannot fix them. But they will take months to find parts to get it fixed before they do that. We have been treated awful from First American customer service. Was hung up on, was told they will call back. Nothing. Don't waste your money.
