Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

FAHW has not kept their commitment to repair or replace an appliance their repairman cannot fix. But they do relentlessly send repairman. I have had 6 visits total using 2 different appliance repair companies. The first repairman who came out 4 times finally admitted he did not know what was wrong with the dishwasher. The 2nd company came out twice, the 2nd visit I was told he was going to replace a control panel which was already done by the first company and they never returned and the work request was marked by FAHW, closed/completed. I have not received any response from FAHW or the 2nd repair company and consequently, I will have to buy another dishwasher and have it installed.... Read More

I have filed several claims for small items. Each time I noticed the phone time increases. Last call took almost 30 minutes to speak with customer service. Not sure if this is intentional or ? Now, I filed a claim for repair to electrical outlet. After several days they tell me that they don't have anyone to come out and that I must find a repair company on my own and pay directly out of my pocket and then at a undetermined time they will reimburse but I have no way of knowing how their process works and nor do I keep several hundreds dollars laying around since I only have social security. Regardless, that's why I entered into a contract with them to avoid such hassle. I feel they are... Read More

I've graciously given First American Home Warranty 1-star, only because had no option to rank them lower. We were talked into adding coverage for the pool on our new home because the salesperson convinced us that one repair could pay for the whole thing. Reluctantly, I agreed. Back on July 4th, our pool broke down. We called them on July the 6th and they said they would send someone out quickly to take a look. 2 weeks later someone arrived. The long and short, they only reported the work that needed to be done. Since then, First American Home Warranty has shown a level of incompetence like I've never seen in a company. Here we are on September the 15th. We are supposed... Read More

Don't do business with this company. Incompetent intake people, systems that are not streamlined with their contractors, too many levels for simple approvals. They have no sense of urgency even if their own people screwed up, causing a delay in getting something done. The plumbing contractor they chose obviously does not trust them either....a verbal approval is not good enough. They require an actual PO before they will do anything. This was not the case a few years ago with American Home Shield. AHS got my garage door fixed the same day. FAHW took one week to replace a water heater. That is a week without hot water. After you enter a claim online, their own return email says to... Read More

Absolutely terrible. A nightmare trying to get them to send out competent contractors to fix anything. called and left messages multiples times and received no reply. Do not do business with them.

Terrible experience. If you need a complete AC replacement, expect 30 day wait and considerable out of pocket expenses. Their customer service is terrible and they don’t care about their customers. Customer service reps seem to have their hands tied on getting anything done and just read from their script.

Your service is terriable! I take time out of my life daily just to write bad reviews. You have the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I have two open claims, no refidgerator, and have not been reimbursed in three months for a $6400 heat/ac unit. I cannot even talk to a person. My wife and I have spent over two hours on the phone this morning getting constantly cut off, and when we do get to talk to a person, they tell us that its upstairs or in management hands waiting for a decision. You have made my life miserable and I am constantly telling my friends and family to not use your company.

This company gives you the run around. You wait on the phone over an hour to reach someone. They don't return calls. A lot of the time when and if you finally get through the person does not speak good English. We have been hung up on. And, they don't send out very capable repair people. My 95 year old mother has been trying to get her air conditioner fixed for over 3 weeks. Temperatures have been 110 and above. I think they try to wear you out so you just pay for any repair yourself.

WORST service I have ever received - we have been misled, deceived and jerked around since July 6th regarding a Kenmore Elite refrigerator repair. Just had our second service technician come out and tell us the original technician did not communicate the problem so he had to order part again and that it would be Aug 24th before our repair would be completed. 6+ weeks is beyond comprehensible - absolutely miserable experience.

This company is absolutely a nightmare! Do NOT work with them or give your money to them. We have yet to resolve our issue, and I get half-hearted calls from the rep to see if the service request can be closed when the part didn't even arrive. I was told the part was available on two separate occasions, and when I follow-up, they tell me a different story. They claim they never said such a thing and back peddle. I had detailed who called and when they called and for them to call me a liar is just disgusting. The customer service is a sickening experience. The fact they are showing a higher rating is a joke. Read the reviews that are below average since that is the REAL truth.
