Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage. While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances. In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions. Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry. The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing. For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

First American has some of the most affordable service call fees in the industry, which range from $75 to $100, depending on the plan selected and state. The company also offers a vast network of pre-screened contractors and technicians, as well as a 24/7 claims department. This warranty came with the house. I had a good experience the first time I called for a claim. (Garage door issue). This past summer however was a true test of how they treat people. Our ac went out and it was 100+ degrees. I called one day, didn’t hear back from them for 2 days. I called back on the 3rd day and the employee said no one was taking action to get us help. I continued to call daily and they couldn’t find anyone to help me. I finally got upset and demanded to talk to “upper management” and they allowed me to find my own contractor. I had someone at my house the next morning. I realize summer may be a hard time to find ac contractors but they were content to leave me in a... Read More

I inherited this warranty with purchase of my home. Made the mistake of renewing for a second and final time. Small repairs went fine but Once we actually had a big ticket item to repair there were additional fees to repairs labeled modifications in addition to your service fee and monthly payment which makes you wonder what is the point of the warranty?. We had a horrible experience with a company they sent out to perform repairs. We were given differing cash out values by different representatives which were both extremely minimal (of course they went with the least amount even though we were initially given a higher cash out value blaming the representative for misquoting even though... Upon my 27 inch drop-in range being designated as unfixable, first American offered me a 30-inch oven for a replacement. When I explained that it won't fit in my kitchen I was told that they don't HAVE TO fit the size, only the operations of the ranch. My Choice was to either spend thousands of dollars remodeling my kitchen to fit the range they offered or take the cash out offer which covers 30% of the range I need. They explained that since they buy so many appliances they get them at discount prices and therefore the cash out offer was way less than the range actually costs. In the end, I had to pay $800 of my own money to get a functioning oven again. Was not impressed with their "this... Read More

They tell me one thing and turn around and charge me or try to charge me for irrelevant items. Then after my wife talked to the manager for 30 min and didn't solve anything (silent at times, speechless), he still has the nerve to say "can i help you with anything else"

I have to laugh...The write up says California based...however when I call in I always seem to get someone in the Dominican Rep. (Book!) We purchased this coverage almost 10years ago when we bought our home. Our home is ild built in 1950, so we felt it was a justifiable coverage, and the 'if' factor seemed inevitable. Over the years we've had to use it on a few things, and everything seemed to go smoothly. UNTIL NOW. On 7/1/17 our washing machine broke. The appliance company who was assigned to our claim was MAC My Appliance Clinic. They came out on 7/8/17 to inform us we needed X,Y and Z, and they needed to submit it to First American for approval. 2-3 weeks later MAC returned to... Read More

Absolutely unsatisfied with my claim resolution! DO NOT PURCHASE COVERAGE! I opened a claim for my freezer door on August 10th, 2017. Following this claim,First American sent a technician from K &G to fill my claim for my freezer not working. Basically, the seal (or gasket) was replaced about a year and a half ago, but still failed to create a seal. Warm air enters the freezer, causing the freezer to freeze over and ice builds over the motor cover. The K & G technician that came out, Max, was great. He clearly explained to me what was going on with the seal, and why it was freezing. He said he was going to send photos with the report back to First American, and then gave me... Read More

By far the worst company i have ever had to deal with. Customer Service is at the bottom of their list. I have had about 3 claims with them in the past 7 years and none of them have been pleasant. Worst company ever

I had an issue with a garage door opener. I made an original service call 7/6/17 and they sent out a company/technician. That individual chose to try to "fix" the problem rather than replace the part/opener. When I called back 8/26/17, First American stated I would have to start a new service call because it was past 30 days. They rigidly enforced the 30 day rule when the original problem was not fixed.

Customer service is aweful. If you don't constantly stay on top of the contractor and First American, you'll never get the repair/replacement you need. Also, I've been on the phone for 46 minutes and counting, waiting to speak to a supervisor/manager. They refuse to allow the warranty holder to escalate the issue, and so nothing gets done in a timely manner. So frustrated....
