Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Terrible company. This company has no since of urgency. The phone who answer the don’t care or try to help. They took unauthorized charges from my account. Local manger would ever come to the phone or call you back. Avoid this company

Horrible customer service! I previously had a contract with AHS. While the idea behind a home warranty is great, it sometimes does not benefit home owners if their are minor issues. For example; it took over 3 months to get our dishwasher replaced. After paying the $75 deductible, we had to miss work on several occasions to have technique try to repair the item, remove the item, deliver the item, and a separate team to install it. With the monthly charges and time missed from work, it would have been easier just to go to a home improvement store to purchase the dishwasher ourselves. With this being said, we decided to not renew our warranty after our current warranty had expired on... Read More

I am a dissatisfied customer of American Home Shield. My A/C Unit has been down for a week now without any service. I called the customer service today and asked for the number to the Corporate Office, to only be told they could not give out that information. How does the Corporate Office handle or even know about any negative feedback. Im looking to go somewhere else

I am a current AHS residential contract holder, who has been waiting since June 9 to get my refrigerator repaired. I want you to imagine the inconvenience of being without your fridge for nearly three weeks. Worse yet, I contacted AHS again this evening to get a status update on my repair and was told that the repair will be completed before July 4. Last week they told me June 22nd. That’s another 2 weeks from the date given. My family will have been without a refrigerator for nearly a month. The lesson for me with this experience, is to forget a warranty and pay for repairs directly. You will certainly get better service from contractors who don’t have to wait for days and weeks to get... Read More

DO NOT use this company!!! They are horrible, you will not get reimbursed. It is a scam. Period. They wouldn't answer the phone when I needed my hot water replaced, tried numerous times. So I had no choice but to get it replaced myself, and they won't reimburse me because I "didn't call them first". Well, they didn't answer, so I couldn't wait to get it replaced until they did. After I got the job done, tried again and again to call them. Finally after numerous calls I got a non English speaking woman, and she said "oh, yes that is covered. Send us the invoice and we will reimburse you". Lies, all lies!!! Had to file a complaint with the BBB, and they still say I had to call first. Again,... Read More

NOT A GOOD COMPANY !!! Over 30 days without any A/C . System needs to be replaced. Customer service is useless. everyone repeat the same lines from the scrip. Someone will call you in 24 to 48 hrs, We have email the authorization department, some one will call you shortly. over 12 years with this company and you can't even get a call back. Think you American Home Shield. Next step Better Business Bureau..

Since purchasing our warranty with AHS we have submitted 2 claims, one for our garbage disposal and one for our hot water heater. Our home is 8 years old - which is specifically the reason we purchased a home warranty as our home is no longer new. The claims process is horrible. Both times the claims were denied for "overuse" and we were told we would have to pay out of pocket in addition to the service fee. My husband and I both work in the Insurance industry, specifically handling claims. I have never seen a company try to get out of paying a claim as much as this company has - the experience we have had is absolutely terrible. Do not recommend.

These people are the worst rips ever. Had their services for six or seven years. Our furnace broke while my husband was hospitalized at Christmas time and they refused to replace it as the repairman stated was needed. They said it was poorly maintained and was no longer eligible due to neglegence. Strangely, we had an ongoing, long term service contract with one of THEIR representatives. Let's be realistic, well established, top level repair companies do not involve themselves with these type of operations. Only useful if you have old appliances and can't afford replacement. Run!

This is a company with horrendous customer service. Spent hours on call with their non English speaking customer service who are not trained/empowered to do a thing. Over last two service requests, I have spent 4-5 hours waiting/talking to AHS CSRs. They repeat same thing just as a robot/automated answering service would do. Time to dump this. AHS probably stands for American Horror Story.

If I could give negative stars I would. On top of everything else, I log into my account today and suddenly I have no contract in the system?!?! WHAT IS THIS! I was on the phone with AHS for well over an hour today. 90% of that is being on hold. As an update to the last sentence in this review, I still have not received a call back from the supervisor who was supposed to call me directly immediately. It has been 30 minutes I have called AHS on: April 15th May 1st May 5th May 10th May 13th May 14th May 15th May 18th June 5th June 13th June 14th And TODAY, June 18th 2 MONTHS AGO I filed claims for my AC, faucet and a leak in my home. I have called about 10 times now... Read More
