Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I have had issues with cook top and refrigerator for several months. I have made number of phone calls. The technicians came, and told me they could not fix the issues and the cook tops need replacement, since parts are not available. The higher level of tech for refrigerator never responded. Every time I make a phone call I am holding for a long period of time, then the phone either disconnects, or the rep tells me he/she will call me back and I never hear from them. Today also I am holding for last 40 minutes. First phone call disconnected without any warning, and this is the second phone call. The service is terrible at this company. Girish P. Bakersfield, CA

The worst company I've ever had to deal with. Impossible to get any one on the phone, HOURS of wait time. They do NOT replace as they state, it's all a scam!!! Number #1, BS, this site is obviously bought and paid for.

I have been an American Home member for years now. They have no local techs in my area, and I have to wait a week or more for coverage. This has been an on-going issue and they don't seem to remedy the situation. The techs they do send out never ever can fix the situation the first time. This past week I had an issue with HVAC and I had to cancel my service call because yet again I would have to wait a week. I paid a local who was able to come the same day. I am very disappointed with this company and looking else were.

Your coverage is useless for high end appliances. The service providers are Not skilled for high end appliances. Customer services passes you from one stage to next till the customer gives up on the request. If there was a negative rating that is what AHS deserves

Four days to respond to a request for Air Conditioning. In the meantime, i had to find someone just to get the system back up. The service provider who finally came was rude and uncooperative. I cancelled immediately and asked for my money back from the contract and for the service call fee from the service provider. Both were denied. I will never call them again.

We've used AHS as a secondary insurance for our appliances, a/c units, etc at our main home & rental property for two years. We had to use them one time and the one request for service on our dryer was a fiasco. It took almost two weeks for them to process the claim, get a technician out, then approve the technician to work on the dryer. We had to call AHS multiple times to check on the status and each time we had to explain our claim with a different associate (most who speak broken English). Each time they told us they would call us back and never did. AHS is very difficult to work with--it's as if the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing and they do not care about... This company is horrible when it comes to communication and customer service. The representatives are nice enough, but nothing gets resolved and you’re having to call back several times until things are finally handled correctly, which can be beyond frustrating. The few times we’ve needed to use it we had no issues the jobs were done quickly and well. My husband recently opted to change our billing to monthly several months ago. He’s been getting late notices ever since even though they took an advanced payment in addition to the current one. We finally cancelled it last week when they withdrew the annual amount without notice or permission. Rather than get the run around, yet again, we... Read More

Our garage door system malfunctioned a month and half ago. We set up an appointment with a repairman from this company. He came fixed it in less than 10 mins. After 2 days it broke again. Emailed them, did not come back after 2 weeks, then he came one day saying that the garage door system is still under warranty from the manufacturer. We called the manufacturer and they said it’s no longer under warranty cuz it was purchased more than 3 yrs ago. I don’t know if this garage door will ever get fixed. Now we have to wait again. It is so hard to contact them cuz it’s thru email. If they don’t reply you’re pretty much out of luck. Worst!!! Not worth what we are paying them. This is the... Read More

This is the WORST company I have ever dealt with. Please do not use them. I am a young mother with 2 kids and my husband and I have been trying to get our air conditioner fixed for the past two weeks. They have sent multiple companies that have either come or canceled the work order. We found our own contractor and after fighting with AHS yesterday, were told we have authorization for an outside contractor but they had to speak with AHS prior to the job. Our contractor called at 7 PM last night and was told it's under review. At 8 PM I got an email about yet a new company. This morning I was told AHS put in for a second opinion since it cost "too much" money. And if I do the cash... Read More

I'm presently a customer of American Home Shield Warranty. Without notice, AHS raised my rates by 30% and had no answer as to why I didn't receive an email regarding this action. I spoke to a representative who I couldn't understand, could NOT help me and wouldn't let me speak to her supervisor. She said someone would call me back and 24 hours later I've heard not yet heard from anyone! I will be cancelling warranty. They are a TERRIBLE organization and are trying to rip off they customers! I will be contacting the Better Business Bureau to file a complaint which I have never done before.
