Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I called AHS on 04/06/2020 to cancel my contract due to their contractor's performance. I have had AHS for more than 2 years and during these 2 years I rarely used their service. When my refrigerator broke down, they sent out a technician who came into my house with an attitude. He spent less than 10 minutes to diagnose the issue and wrote down his observations on a piece of paper. When my wife asked him what the issue was, he explained in a hurry and immediately left. I was VERY UNHAPPY with the service and called AHS the next day to find out what was going on. The Admin on the other side told me that they were still waiting for the report to come back. Unhappy with AHS for this... Read More

Hi, They were sent to me house by AMERICAN HOME SHIELD for a water heater. The technician said that parts were not available and it would be 395.00 to replace. My warranty covered parts and labor. Draingo reported to AHS that it was a charge due to code. AHS then said they would only cover the parts and to write the check for 395.00 directly to Draingo. I requested the charge amount for this so called code and to separate general install so that AHS would pay me for the install. Draingo refused ! AHS was no help and said the only way to get it done was to pay 395.00 directly to Draingo, because Draingo said it was out of code. No wonder Draingo said it was out of code because they would... They are the worse! Do not waste your money!!! We had AHS warranty and our air went out. We had to pay $100 service call. I received a call stating that they were going to replace my unit and i had to pay $1200. I was later told that they were not replacing my unit. They were only paying $500 towards my repair. Please save your money!!! Save up for minor and major repairs because this is a total waste. We just spent $6k after we thought that we had protection.

We smelled gas each time we took a bath/shower. I contacted American Home Shield online to set up an appointment. A plumber from Kintex Plumbing was contracted to come out. We were contacted by Kintex and were advised to contact our local gas company first. The gas company came out within an hour to confirm that we had a gas leak and high levels of carbon monoxide coming from our water heater. He turned off our water heater and posted a carbon copy of everything he found. After he left; I contacted Kintex and relayed everything that was told to us by the gas company. The plumber from Kintex came by took pictures to submit to AHS. When the plumber returned to replace the water... Read More

We had our Washer broke and logged a ticket with AHS and then next day we had the Ice Machine in Refrigerator break, So fearing i had to pay another 75$ for the deductible I called and waited patiently for over 90 mins but after the call did go through the agent was able to add the ice Machine to the existing ticket and the technician was able to address both things. Long Story short the washer was broken beyond normal repair so i got a brand new top pf the line washer and he ordered a new ice machine and came back and installed the new ice machine. I chcekd the price of the washer and it was much cheaper on the AHS marketplace than on Home Depot or other websites. Over all even if have... Read More

AHS - I just got off the phone with a (4/10/20 - 12:58pm) Brianna regarding the order of a new washing machine. As we talked, I noticed that she was being very short with me. At the end of the call I asked her if there was something I said that was causing her to be short with me (rude/condescending) that I could apologize for as I was not understanding what I could have said. Briana commenced to say to me , " I don't feel I need to answer that, there are other home owners waiting for me to assist them and if there wasn't anything I needed she was going to end the call" Of course I asked again .. to clarify in case she wasn't taking what I had to said seriously, "Please let me know... This company is terrible to work with. They have no Vendors in this area, (even though they used to) the closest is 50 miles away. The plumber I use in my area diagnosed the problem right away but I couldn't use him because he is not on the AHS call list (he used to be). The person AHS sent came out the following day, was here for 5 minutes, took a picuture of the water heater and left saying he needed to get approval from AHS before he can do anything. That was 3 days ago and AHS still hasn't recieved the paperwork from their vendor. When speaking with an AHS representative I'm told they can't do anything until they get the paperwork. I told him I have not had hot water for 4 days... Read More

Perfect world everything is good. Real expertise comes out on a cloudy day. I had experienced multiple times where the 1)AHS representatives has no idea on whats going on the request and no control over their vendors, Either vendors does not respond in time nor provide complete information. 2)There is no internal control to oversee aged service request, they depend on customers to call every time and go and chase vendor. 3) Also people who answer phone goes by rules in the book. I have been chasing for a service request for over 10days , every time I call them they dial vendor and vendor does not answer, they give me the same answer they have to wait for 24hr to get a response... An electrician was sent by AHS to fix a light fixture in my kitchen. Electrician said it had been broken for more than five years so he would not fix it (Not sure how he came up with that as it was not true.) AHS then called and told me the job would not be covered and I owed the deductible. I explained that the electrician's assessment was incorrect and I needed AHS to send another electrician. Then AHS countered that light fixtures were not covered by my contract. Fortunately, I had my contract in front of me during this conversation and could point to the 3rd item on the 'Covered Items' list: Light fixtures. After emailing my contract to a supervisor and waiting two days, AHS... Read More
