Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

We have had a very difficult time with American Home Shield. Early morning 5/7/2020, our hot water heater broke and dumped gallons of water into our finished basement, soaking carpets. The same day, we called American Home Shield, with whom we have had insurance for over a year, and they told us a leaking and broken hot water heater is NOT an urgent issue and therefore could NOT be considered a priority. Long (very long!) story short, we were told we’d have to wait. It would likely be Monday 5/11/2020 before we could be seen, and then an additional 24-48 hours to get a new unit ordered and installed if needed. We would not get hot water in the house until the following... Read More

The Worst home warranty I've ever seen in my life, their customer service is sucks and they are thieves. they just want to charge you with the service then tells you it's not warranted, like refrigerator, plumbing issue, second refrigerator and others... their communication is sucks.

Worse company ever. Part of their business practice is to send out contractors that try to prove that they don't cover your claim. How do these board members sleep at night? I guess their business is to only collect the deductibles. They did not cover my broken washing machine, tub and sink stoppage. Our hot water heater broke and they said they'll cover it, however, I needed to pay an $1100 fee to bring it up to code.

I have cathedral ceilings. I submitted a service request to have my ceiling fan repaired- service guy came, looked up at fan and said I don’t do those. AHS said they canceled the repair because the fan is not accessible. The company the used didn’t have al ladder to get that high. My take is use a company that can repair, or remove that service from your contact.

I have had good luck with the company. The only time that I was not happy was with the phone service,I was hold for 2 hours waiting to talk with someone about a refrigerator

AHS resolved an HVAC issue that was overlooked on a previous warranty inspection on our system. They didn't request an additional charge and the problem was resolved quickly by the responding technician. Great job on all parties.

We've been using AHS forma couple years now and haven't regretted it one bit. We have had to file for AC repairs a couple times and haven't had any issues with scheduling or getting the job done. They give us the option to choose from different companies that we would want to do the work. When it comes to a recall on the same issue, AHS hasnt given us a problem about that either. Highly recommend!

My first experience with a service provider was outstanding from my initial request through the completion of my service request. There seemed to be a succinct coordination between American Home Shield and the contracted company, the expectation was set, and the service provider delivered.

AHS scheduled an appointment in a timely manner as soon as I put the work order in. Plumber was able to come out the following day and provided friendly service .
