Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Our A.C. unit went out. Sent a request to AHS that day. Our unit was fixed within 48 hours of the request. Very satisfied with the service we received.

The service people that y'all use epic mechanical service did not apply to my account that I had paid which made my account look like a negative $75 for the service call. Even though I called epic mechanical service and told them the situation the lady said that she was going to call but apparently she didn't because it's still showing my account being negative. need to have a better system on when the customer pays I'm glad I paid with a check that I have evidence that I paid cuz if I had paid with cash I would have been S.O.L

I own tow homes and have both covered by American Home Shield. During the past month I have had the occasion to submit a service request on each home. One request was for a leaking water heater and the other for a broken central air unit. In both cases parts were covered but in both cases "additional labor" was required, The labor was necessary in order to bring the units up to code or to insure the unit was restored to like new as required by AHS. In both cases the cost was $175. One was to drill a hole through brick to accommodate an over flow line from the pan under the water heater. To avoid a days delay to finish the water heater I loaned the contractor a hammer drill to... Read More

A person would be better off to save the money than get a policy with Home Shield but if you must get a policy this company is better than others from what I have been told by workmen. Yes, they replaced the disposal twice but code changed where a person has to now have a plug but they won't cover that even though the electrician was there because of a non working ceiling fan which they wouldn't replace. Put in new water heater and the reviews of the brand are horrible. Had a gas leak under the house and plumber already there so had them fix it as the gas had to be turned off immediately. Then the gas company had to inspect before gas allowed to be turned back on. This took days to get... Read More

Didn't cover everything on an A/C repair but did cover some. Worth the money for the plan but next time I'll upgrade to the next level.

Please DO NOT bother with this people! Their customer service is incredibly unsatisfactory. In addition, they companies they contract with and assign to a case are cheap incompetent and unreliable; lousy customer service more like non- existent. After 1 year with AHS and numerous headaches for 2 separate breakdowns I just cancelled my policy. They will promptly and consistently bill your monthly premium but when you need them they are NO help at all. AHS is NOT worthy of your $$! I cannot give them even 1/4 of a star they are so bad! but in order to be able to submit this review they make it mandatory you use the star rating system and that's the only reason I had no choice but... Have had the service for 8 years now and it has paid for itself every year. However, it is extremely difficult to talk with a live person unless you want to wait 15+ minutes most times. Also, the turnaround time is pretty slow. If something breaks on a weekend you'll have to wait until Monday to even schedule someone, which then takes a few more days. So, a Saturday issue might not be resolved until mid week. Overall, I'm happy with the security of having it, and just have to accept that issues get fixed slower.

This has been the most horrible experience I have had with a company EVER!!!! I would not recommend AHS to anyone. My family (husband, baby and 2 cats) have been out of our home for 6 days now due to extreme heat (110 degrees today) and a broken AC unit. After 6 days, numerous hours on hold (literallyHOURS at a time) and several rude customer service employees, AHS is refusing to repair our AC because they claim it was broken prior to our policy start date. This is untrue and no one can bother to investigate or follow up with this claim. If you live in Arizona and are shopping around for a home warranty, remember this..... DO NOT GO WITH AHS!!!!
