Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

started off good but now when you need to call in the hold times are ridiculous. I am on hold right now going on 45 minutes and can not receive any help other than holding.

Beware of quotes like this on consumeradvocate from ahs: "i would like to follow up with you regarding this experience. Please send your information to social@ahslink.Com, attention "consumers advocate" and we will follow up with you. Thanks" this is a blanket customer service statement that attempts to put any potential customers at ease about investing in their product. The truth is, unless ahs has invested heavily in their cs department, you will wait, indefinitely, for a response from them. Initial recognition does not equal good customer service. I don't see any reviews about how their follow up responses have helped, do you? Please let me know. My several follow ups... Read More

We have been customers of AHS for more than 17 years and I can truly say that over the past 5 to 7 years their service has continually declined to the point of being deplorable! Every year one of our AC units goes out, every year they send out a contractor who just puts a bandaid fix on the unit and charges us several hundred $$ for Freon. This year, we asked for a different contractor who actually did some real work on both of the units. However, due to fine print, and bringing various items up to code, etc, we still had to pay $2,000 out of pocket to repair both of these A/C units. That was 96 days ago. Now, one of the units is not working again and guess what?!!! We have had to... Read More

American Home Shield is exceptionally gifted at delivering the worst customer service I have ever experienced. You will never be able to contact someone over the phone if you need help. Go ahead and accept this as your AHS Home Warranty FATE, because inevitably you will spend hours and hours and hours on hold as I have. Honestly I didn't think you could get this bad. Additionally if AHS offers you a cash option for your appliance that broke they will make you wait quite a long time. They say 10-14 days after approval. I am still waiting 30 days past approval for a marginal cash option after my stove started leaking gas. Continuing with this trend, AHS contractors are not well... Read More

The wait time to speak to someone, for me and for the contractor, is consistently very long. In this day and age AHS fails to provide email or online chat assistance which might make contacting them less of a hassle for their customers or the contractors. AHS scheduled a contractor with multiple bad reviews on the BBB site in my area which I find to be irresponsible. I had a horrible experience with them and requested another contractor which led to a longer time that my senior pets and i were without air conditioning in Florida in July. In addition, AHS denied part of a repair that was a supposedly an access issue without contacting me and checking into what the contractor was... Read More

3 stars for an average rating. Average being acceptable but not outstanding. Here's why 1. One time the plumber they sent BROKE my washer lid while fixing a leaky pipe. So then I had to pay ANOTHER service charge for someone to repair it. 2. I accidentally clicked the wrong service order for my AC unit online and they charged me for TWO service calls, even though I called AHS and explained my mistake. 3. Thank goodness for their online service orders, their wait time on calls is ridiculously loooooong. 4. Once a service request has been made, they promptly get you a repairperson. Then they have 24 hours to get in touch with you. Some of the companies get in touch quickly, some not so... Read More

I contacted Mr. Gaines with Gaines Appliance in Ripley on July 23, 2017 regarding our air condtioner. (he had already worked on it about 3 weeks prior with the same issue) We never heard from him, so I called him on July 27, 2017. He set an appointment for Friday, July 28, 2017 between 8:00-9:00. My husband stayed home to let him in. He did not show up until 11 am. My husband had to cancel an appointment at his financial services office at 10:00. The first time I tried to call him around 9:30 his phone went straight to voicemail. We were not impressed with his company.
