Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

We have had AHS for many years. It is apparent that they hire young, inexperienced people for customer service, hold time is long, and they know nothing about any appliances, HAV or know any technical terms. They do get the warranty work done, but due to their requirements to the contractor you have to wait for parts. Finally, it would be nice to see the total bill, not just the portion that I have had to pay. For example, I paid $1645 plus deductible to fix our central A/C, yet to this day do not know what they paid on the repair versus the total bill. Having a total bill could have given me options as to whether or not to replace the unit.

AHS is like fighting city hall, you, the consumer will never prevail. As their technicians are only human, they make mistakes, like going to the wrong address, as was my case. They charged me $100 for a missed appointment. As I, my wife and father in law were all home at our appointment time, they said no one was home. Just another way for them to get more money. Even the technician said that he was never at my house. I'm sure I am not the only one this has happened to.

American home shield gave us false hope of repairs just to get us to sign up. 2/3 of the service providers they sent to our house were completely incompetent and did not fix our appliances AND still billed us, just for driving to the house. So far all we've done is pay the service fees and premium just to be told they can't fix out problem. All of this money could have been better placed in fixing our issues on our own and getting to chose a contractor we trust to do a good job

This is the worst company you can deal with. They will look for any opportunity not to cover per your agreed contract. I had to pay about $4,000 for a slab leak that was covered. Terrible...

Sunday August 13th 2017, my hot water heater was found leaking. I called American Home Shield (AHS) at 866-480-9976. AHS said, Innovations LV LLC DBA Plumbing Innovations, will call me in 24-hours. (Monday). “If they don’t call, their number is 702-496-9625.” My verification # 424519842 Monday I was contacted by Innovations LV LLC DBA Plumbing Innovations. I was unable to find an actual address for this company. They said they would not be able to get to my hot water heater till Wednesday. I didn’t consider from Sunday to Wednesday a “Timely Manner” so I called American Home Shield to get the name of some other contractors in the area that may be able to do it sooner. I could not get... Read More

It is a pleasure to provide an outstanding review for American Home Shield. I was at a point in life where I could not endure a major household repair cost. My house was now 10 years old and even though I had not had any significant issues it just felt like it was only a matter of time. I concluded that it would be economically prudent to insure my home and pool and spa. I didn't really have any costs the first year and I questions the necessity of this policy. Then came far more than I would have ever anticipated. First it was the garbage disposal then the air conditioning and then the refrigerator freezer and most recently my spa heater. Thanks to American Home... Read More

We were given to understand that the service would replace or cover at least 80 per cent of repair cost. It doesn't
