Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I have had American Home Shield for almost 5 years now and have had several issues with my home. Have never had an issue with them. They have always been prompt, professional and trustworthy. The companies they send out to fix the issues in my house have always done a good job and have also been prompt and professional. I would definitely recommend American Home Shield to anyone that owns a house.

It was the most frustrating experience. False accusations of not having paid my previous service bill - i called to verify that the bill was indeed paid; was put on hold for 45 minutes whilst the woman on the phone checked with the vendor that i did indeed pay them directly as requested upon conclusion of the work; somehow 10 days later when i want to order a service for my AC, i cannot proceed further online until i select a payment method as the system has not been updated 10 DAYS later; am on the phone for 90 minutes- yes 90 minutes and THEN get disconnected!! Tried again next day - meanwhile no AC - same thing - on hold for 45 minutes- finally decided to reach out to the local rep... Read More

So far I have needed to use my AHS insurance twice. Both times they have sent someone out quickly, and the issue was fixed. Good experience both times.

We had an issue with our AC unit. And we were told by the company that AMS sent out to check the unit would cover the cost except for the full amount for the refrigerant. My husband asked the company if they could fix the repair and add the refrigerant later. When I called AMS about having the unit repaired. I was told that the unit was not covered and that it was a pre-existing issue. Our home was inspected two years prior and there was not problem related to the AC unit. Therefore, if the unit passed inspection that means there was no issue.

I've had warranties with AHS for 5+ years and the experience has been very positive. Pros include having online service request options which is convenient. Each time I've requested assistance, the contractor has been responsive (typically they've reached out within 24 hours to schedule service) I've never had a service request incomplete. The only con I've experienced is that depending on the type of service needed (i.e. plumbing or A/C ) and the time of year it is, appointments can sometimes be delayed for weeks which would likely be the case with or without a warranty so I don't believe it is the fault of AHS. I would definitely recommend American Home Shield Home Warranty to any... Read More

I was very surprised how well the program has worked so far! The AHS warranty came with a home I purchased in the Chicago suburbs. Within the first two months the warranty repaired the Sub Zero fridge, garage door springs, plumbing and a huge (out of network) HVAC/space pack issue. The program works well. The ONLY issue so far is finding a contractor to work on space packs. The automated ticket system could not account for this product. My contractor and I had to wait for 2+ hours to obtain OUT OF NETWORK repair authorization but it was WELL WORTH IT. I would have given them 5 full STARS but the wait for out of network authorization was way, way too long.

Last week you emailed me that EcoSystems Heating and Air would contact me within 24 hours, No one has contacted me and it has been 6 days though I do realize there was the Labor day holiday. The reason I needed this visit on my AC is because the last team you sent out never fixed my AC. They installed a new compressor and then charged me 780 dollars for freon. The AC works for about 15 to 20 minutes in the morning and then doesn't work the rest of the day. The owner of that company said I was using my system wrong. REALLY you put it on cool there is no other way to use it. Right now I am most likely to cancel my service with AHS even though they have been wonderful until this... Read More

I had AHS for a year before I needed them, of course it was hottest week in Georgia when my AC went out on June 21st. I was without my AC until July 5th. Mainly due to the fact that AHS seems to have crappy contractors as their contractors for their warranty service. Then I had some shower faucets that were not working properly, so different contractor. They were waiting on a part that they said had a long lead time and when I finally started asking questions and escalating the issue myself, I was able to get the part that costs $0 because it's a warranty part for my shower and it's a standard stock item. I spent 4 months believing what the contractor said. After reading over AHS... Read More

Not sure what I've been paying for all these years. The last time I used AHS to get HVAC service the technician said the issue was not covered at all. So we were out of pocket for the visit with no solution. Furthermore the tech was supposed to get back to us with information so that we could look into finding a solution, and never heard back since. Is this just an elaborate scam?

They responded quickly to get a repair company out to fix air conditioning unit. Repair company responded within 72 hours (over weekend) and unit was up and running within a hour of the repair man arriving at our home.
