Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I’d first like to say I’m a real estate broker and have properties of my own. I regretfully say we referred American Homesheild in the past, but until I was a customer never knew what type of service they actually provided. I have heard the terrible stories from clients, and experience them recently myself. I had mutliple properties covered on their plan and was never able to get them to handle a claim once. Contractors in your area will have already had bad experiences as well and won’t work with them leaving the low end guys who just want to collect your service fee and never show up again. I’m in Austin TX and hope no other person has to be ripped off again. They will do it to you so... Read More

I was a customer of American Home Shield and my A/C went out and you sent a company that stated I needed some part and freon, well I found later that there was a leak and regardless it was burned out. That 3rd party caused me to leave American Home Shield. My unit had to be replaced because of that Representative. I tried calling but no one ever returned my phone call.

Used American Home Shield Home Warranty for almost eight years. The prices and copays have almost doubled and the quality of service greatly deteriorated. The last call on our dishwasher, had three different technicians work on the dishwasher two provided different diagnosis of the problem leading to ordering two separate sets of parts. The dishwasher still doesn't work properly. Decided to start saving out annual fee and using that to pay for any repairs required in the future. It will cost the same and we'll get better service.

They left a 80 year man without A/C over a year. Stay away from this company. 10 years 4 issues and paid out of pocket for 3 of them because they did not fix. Most contractors HATE dealing with them and so should you.

Absolutely do NOT choose American Home Shield for your home warranty service. After being a customer for 5 years, we will be discontinuing our service with American Home Shield and will be telling every person possible about the horrible service we recently received. Our nightmare began on Saturday, May 26th (Memorial Weekend). Our sewage pump alarm started going off and we had complete stoppage and raw sewage overflowing into our yard. We called immediately and started a claim. We were assigned a plumber and knew that on a holiday weekend we would probably not get a call back. Because this was a crisis, we called the assigned plumber and they did not answer. We made the decision to... Read More

I have nothing but trouble from one of their vendors concerning my air condition. AHS has done nothing to fix the problem, I asked for a different company to come out but they sent the same sorry company again US Air Texas This installers damaged my house and US AIR TEXAS is acting like no damage has been done. ASH needs to get better vendors for their customers.

American Home Shield is not ethical. They authorized me to find a vendor because their vendor was not available for about 8 to 10 business days to look at our issue. The only requirement they stated was that, once the outside vendor makes a diagnosis, to call them with the work order number and the quote for approval. These steps were followed to a tee. Then AHS wanted a second opinion. Because the item is in the attic, hard to get to, it was over 100 degrees in the attic, the name plate was not visible, and the part was completely dead, my vendor had to remove the motor. AHS told me that the motor had to be reinstalled in the attic for them to do their second opinion. Again, they... Read More

I waited 4 days for A/c service after they came and partially fixed it the first time. They take forever on the phone to get you someone. What a mistake to use this company. There are better companies out there. Stay away from this company.

The service is all right unless you need a refund for work not completed. I requested service in Feb and their vender was unable to fix the problem and told me that they had to order a part but they did not even understand the problem. I called an outside company who fixed it in one visit and found that the part needed was under warranty. Now I have been waiting for a refund for the service call from American Home Shield and, like the problem, I am continuously being told that they will take care of it but it is now 4 months and they can not even tell me the status of the refund.

American Home Shield is one of the worst home warranty companies I have used. Their contractors are con artists. When our A/C was running but running 10 degrees hotter then what it was set too. I called AHS and they sent out A-1 Pro heating and air who told me my Evap Coil was damaged and leaked out all my freon after several days and Phone calls to both AHS and A-1. I finally got the quote it fix my A/C $1000 out of pocket but A-1 Pro heating and air refused to fix the problem unless i replaced the condenser as well which was not covered for another $3000. I got a second option out of my own pocket and discovered that i was only 2lbs light on freon. I called AHS and told them I wanted... Read More
