Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

On the very first time I attempted to use this insurance - it failed.... #1. All they appear to have is a FOREIGN call center... and they do not speak American English. #2. The foreign call center employees refuse to provide a supervisor - flat out refused. #3. The foreign call center employees ALSO refused to provide access to a US based call center.......................... SO after an hour of attempting to understand the person on the other end of the phone - the claim was made that my AC would be fixed. Then everything went sideways. The company they contracted to fix our AC never showed up - AHS said they could get someone else out to fix it WITHIN A WEEK OR... Read More

.On May 15, 2018, I called AHS because my washer would't spin. Three days later the vendor came & said I need a new motor. Ten days later they installed the new motor, but said I needed a transmission. Another 10 days they came with the transmission, but said it was a faulty part. On 19 May they were supposed to come with the replacement transmission, but never showed up. They rescheduled and after 2 1/2 hrs said that I needed a new motor. I called AHS and they said no part had been ordered. I called the repair shop and they said I needed a new tub and a split ring, but not a new motor. The repair shop did not order the tub and split ring until Jun 30. I called AHS and was told by... Read More

I am not sure how AHS received such high ratings. They say the get a company out immediately but that is not what really happens. You get a phone call immediately but you may not get service for a week. I had to wait almost 2 weeks before someone came out to repair my air conditioner. I just filed another claim and if it takes a more than a few weeks I am going to get rid of them. I have a 75.00 copay plus they take on another 5.00 for tax. My monthly rate is 68.00 a month. The reason I am on this site now is because I am looking for a better company. I don't have any problem with paying the monthly fee or even the copay but the AHS customer service STINKS. If anyone has a... Read More

This has been the most horrible experience between you and Suretec in Louisiana. Almost 2 months to get a microwave fixed and parts you continue to let Suretec order. They blame you and AHS blames Suretec. This is sick and I just want cash to go buy new microwave. Elizabeth Johnson.

I am a former client. This company is a sham. They will use every trick and loophole to not honor the contract. Don't be fooled by their slogan that they will be there for you. My Air conditioning went out on a Thursday evening, and I notified AHS about the problem. On Friday, their A.C. company called me and told me they couldn't come out till Monday. When I called back to AHS, they told me that even though my problem was an emergency, that their companies aren't required to respond for 48 hrs. When I informed them that Monday would be 96 hrs., they said they Don't count weekends. DON'T BE SCAMMED BY THIS COMPANY!

This is the WORST home warranty company I have ever worked with. I have been with them for 7 years and everytime there is a claim that needed they don't respond in a timely manner nor can their technicians fix the problem. I had to go to an outside company to fix my air conditioner on my rental property last year because AHS, screwed up on the scheduling and never sent out the air conditioner repair person. This is after paying $50.00 a month for 6 years. I tried using them for my rental property to fix my pool, and my warranty was cancelled without getting any notification to me. I never authorized the cancellation, and now I don't have a warranty on my house and I have given them... Read More

American Home Shield for me is the worst company. I paid for a premium policy, and when my A/C sprung a leak, they sent a guy out, he takes 5 mins on the roof, has me sign for permission for AHS to repair. My idea of repair is to replace the part that is leaking, that is not what they are going to do. Because the tech told them he could repair the coil by removing the coil taking it to his shop for 4 days clean, solder the leak. Pressure test for a day then come out and put it on. I live in Phoenix it is 112, my A/C is cooling to 85 - 87 deg now. AHS will not put me and my dog in a hotel or even give me a portable A/C, and they will not pay for a new part. They told me I could call a... Read More

Worst company I've ever dealt with. Does not honor contract, does not follow through with service. You stay on hold for literally hours waiting for service calls or resolution. Would never recommend this company to anyone, and in fact will go out of my way to let anyone who will listen to please shop elsewhere. They look for ways to not honor their contract. I give them no rating because any score would be better than what they deserve.

My experience on an air conditioning replacement was far less than satisfactory.

I typed my review and supposedly it did not submit. BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY! I inquired last week if I had coverage through my warranty on a particular item. I was told that I did but had a $125 deductible. I realized that I had a deductible, but just wanted to see if it was covered. I told the lady that I wanted to check to see what it would actually cost for the repair because I had them cover something before and the cost would have actually been less than the deductible, but I had to pay the deductible. Lesson learned! When I called back today, I was told that I did not have a warranty and that it was under another person's name and had been cancelled. We argued back and... Read More
