Banfield Pet Hospital is a nationwide network of over 900 pet hospitals that offers an Optimum Wellness plan instead of traditional accident and illness pet insurance.

The plan offers in hospital services designed to diagnose, treat and prevent future medical conditions.

These include head to tail exams, nutritional consultations, and dental care.

Overall Rating: 2.3 / 5 (Average)

Banfield Pet Hospital offers an "Optimum Wellness Plan" which allows unlimited wellness visits to any of the numerous nationwide Banfield facilities.

This is a pro-active approach to identify potential problems in your dog or cat before they start.

This is indeed a great idea, but seeing as no one can predict a serious accident, at least an accident-only plan is warranted.

And since Banfield does not provide this, you'll have to get a separate plan from another carrier.

Banfield Pet Hospital Coverage

Coverage - 2.5 / 5

Banfield Pet Hospital does not offer pet insurance rather an "Optimum Wellness Plan."

This is a preventative program that covers your dog or cat for head-to-tail exams, vaccines, early screening diagnostics, consultations for proper nutrition, and dental care at any of the more than 900 Banfield locations across the US and Puerto Rico.

The wellness coverage is unparalleled protection, and also includes unlimited office visits.

However, it can run around the same price as comprehensive accident and illness policies from pet insurance providers.

Banfield operates 3 levels of wellness coverage.

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 2 / 5

Similarly there is no reimbursement percentage as this is not pet insurance.

Your Banfield discount membership entitles you to 100% coverage of all the routine and preventative care associated with your plan level.

Deductibles - 3.5 / 5

There are no deductibles associated with care under Banfield's Optimum Wellness Plan, just a membership fee.

All procedures are covered 100% depending on your membership level.

Pricing: How much does Banfield Pet Hospital cost?

Cost - 2 / 5

Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans are, by and large, a little less expensive that fully comprehensive pet insurance plans that do not include wellness.

A Banfield plan may be an ideal addition to an accident only plan from another provider in order to ensure complete coverage.

What's more, it is significantly more convenient than reimbursement-model wellness plans as they will have all your info at the hospital of your choice and there will be no claim process.

I have been with Banfield over 7 years. Although I like the pet hospitals that we have been to, I am very disappointed in their pet insurance. I moved from NY to North Carolina 13 months ago and called Banfield about 4 months ago when I realized that NC prices are cheaper, they have been overcharging me $12 every month that I've lived here. When I called to change my monthly fee, they told me that I don't have a contract, but they still have to charge me NY prices. I told them to have a manager call me so we can discuss this further. A manager did call and left a message, but I was not able to answer the phone, I was at work. When I called back (several times), nobody got back to me. They... Read More

Do not sign up, scam. You pay and they never can get you in for an appointment. You can drop off, or schedule month's in advance. Well what if something comes up? Better just call somewhere else first. It is November, and I have been paying since June. I have not been able to get my pet in since that first visit, but they never miss taking my money. I call to cancel, and am told I will have to pay for the rest of the year now then, wait , what? Run to any other vet!!It will save you money, I am paying $300 for an ear infection, and the vet wouldn't even clean his ears prior to giving him medicine? Crazy, I should have known better, and am not even going to shop at PetSmart now, I... Read More

We paid for this plan in full on time for 16 years ($9,216.00). My wife thought it was a "good deal" because they sold us "insurance". What a rip-off. When the dog had to be put down I was happy to cancel it - but we were told that we owed an additional $320.00 because the dog already had its first exam for that year (where they tried relentlessly to push additional treatments on an animal that was both blind but also near death). Turns out it is not "insurance" but all you are doing is paying up front for a $576 annual checkup. I didn't even order their expensive medications "after" the discounts because they were 1. easier 2. cheaper 3. in stock online. Save your money - and if you... Read More

Banfield cares about the bottom dollar. They are owned by Mars and big money speaks. No compassion for losing your job, your furbaby or better yet being told by a vet, "I dont know what you expect me to do about it". Well for one thing your a Veterinarian and I have my furbaby here for you to help. He was having seizures and had gone blind. The specialist was taking care of blindness but seizures were a mystery. This doctor needs to go back to school. Banfield has some good docs but they leave after a couple years. I have used Banfields for years trying to get out of the plan is a nightmare. My furbaby is gone with no help from a slew of veterinarians. If you truly care about your furbaby... Read More

My ocicat Ziva developed FIP. After a month and a half fight to save her life, we ultimately had to put her to sleep to end her suffering. And yes, I will need to continue making monthly payments for four more months after her death. However, the unlimited office visits, and discounts on services and medications, that I received during her illness due to having her on the Essential Wellness Plan, still made the Plan an excellent value. In addition, Ziva's care team at the Rochester Minnesota Banfield were PHENOMENAL. I felt that she was given the best quality of care that she could have possibly received, and I felt that the whole team there truly cared about both she and I. When I... Read More

This company is the worst and unethical pet insurance company out there and should be boycotted in fact Pet Smart should be ashamed that they have them in there stores. They are fraudulent and predatory. Poor customer service, practice usury, and beware of the fine print as they will bill you and renew your contract without authorization. Beware Beware Beware

Beware when you sign up for this service. If your pet dies you still have to pay for the whole year. I renewed my dog's plan and found out within a few days that she had cancer which they couldn't treat. They referred me to a different Vet. She later died and I found out I had to pay the remaining months on the plan or pay for the ONE visit I had which was $1600. BE CAREFUL with these people.

DON'T FALL FOR IT!!!! PLEASE DO NOT SIGN THE CONTRACT!!! IT'S a RIP OFF! They are preying on people when they are feeling helpless and scared with sick pets! They are a large corporation FOR PROFIT and THATS what they care about. Not you or your pet. Any good vets that work there move on because of this. (1) Our needed EXPENSIVE prescription was not available there or even ordering through them and I was not able to get any sort of a discount on it elsewhere. (2) Thyroid lab work was supposed to be covered but was not "Because their in-house machines do not work properly and they have to send them to an outside lab which is a separate charge". (3) Duplicate lab work was insisted... Read More

I read the reviews with great enthusiasm and the feeling I get is Banfield tries to "upsell" for servicrs not covered and brings on the "guilt trip" tp add additional pressure. This is particularly true with the male Vet at the Wesley Chapel Banfiled location. Unless you want the "used car salesman" approach to your pet care.. avoid the male Vet at this location. I am seriously reconcidering renewing my insurance plan at Banfield.

I initially signed up for my puppy to be nutured and 35 days later changed my mind, because they charged additional monthly installments that equaled 326.00 and other hospitals, nonmember rates were $136.00 Banfield refused to reimburse my first two months and took an additional two months before canceling the unused service. They SUCK and their staff is incompetent, specially customer dis-service headquarters.
