Banfield Pet Hospital is a nationwide network of over 900 pet hospitals that offers an Optimum Wellness plan instead of traditional accident and illness pet insurance.

The plan offers in hospital services designed to diagnose, treat and prevent future medical conditions.

These include head to tail exams, nutritional consultations, and dental care.

Overall Rating: 2.3 / 5 (Average)

Banfield Pet Hospital offers an "Optimum Wellness Plan" which allows unlimited wellness visits to any of the numerous nationwide Banfield facilities.

This is a pro-active approach to identify potential problems in your dog or cat before they start.

This is indeed a great idea, but seeing as no one can predict a serious accident, at least an accident-only plan is warranted.

And since Banfield does not provide this, you'll have to get a separate plan from another carrier.

Banfield Pet Hospital Coverage

Coverage - 2.5 / 5

Banfield Pet Hospital does not offer pet insurance rather an "Optimum Wellness Plan."

This is a preventative program that covers your dog or cat for head-to-tail exams, vaccines, early screening diagnostics, consultations for proper nutrition, and dental care at any of the more than 900 Banfield locations across the US and Puerto Rico.

The wellness coverage is unparalleled protection, and also includes unlimited office visits.

However, it can run around the same price as comprehensive accident and illness policies from pet insurance providers.

Banfield operates 3 levels of wellness coverage.

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 2 / 5

Similarly there is no reimbursement percentage as this is not pet insurance.

Your Banfield discount membership entitles you to 100% coverage of all the routine and preventative care associated with your plan level.

Deductibles - 3.5 / 5

There are no deductibles associated with care under Banfield's Optimum Wellness Plan, just a membership fee.

All procedures are covered 100% depending on your membership level.

Pricing: How much does Banfield Pet Hospital cost?

Cost - 2 / 5

Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans are, by and large, a little less expensive that fully comprehensive pet insurance plans that do not include wellness.

A Banfield plan may be an ideal addition to an accident only plan from another provider in order to ensure complete coverage.

What's more, it is significantly more convenient than reimbursement-model wellness plans as they will have all your info at the hospital of your choice and there will be no claim process.

We had insurance for our dog. Our dog dies and they still want to charge us for the remaining year. It does not make sense. We pay over $45 a month, the dog dies and they still want our money. It's incredible!!! Do not go into contract with them on a month to month payment. It's a rip off! They get you when the dog dies and you end up paying more for the services rendered. I ended paying over $500 to end the contract.

I WILL NEVER SPEND ANOTHER DIME ON THIS PLAN AS LONG AS I LIVE! I've had my dog since he was 6 weeks old, he's had some version of Banfield's Wellness Plan since he was 8 weeks old. I currently pay 55.00 a month. He'll be 7 next month (June). Besides his annual checkups, heartworm and vaccinations I've never needed to use the plan for emergencies (thank God), until today. My dog woke up this morning barely able to walk not able to maneuver my stairs at all and it seemed to worsen as the day progressed. I couldn't take anymore and finally called HIS VET'S office location and they would not see him. Apparently they were full the receptionist gave me the number to another location and... Read More

Well after having a horrible Vet look at my pup and she went nuts when he touched her I wanted to cancel my insurance with them. Well that can't happen. It will coat me more to cancel that to keep it for the next 6 months. They get you coming and going. Even if I want my pups fixed Banfield wants 740.00 dollars when our local spay and neuter clinic is just 190.00 who is Banfield to ask for such high costs. I am sorry I did this program and will not do it ever again.

Cannot emphasize enough what has been echoed below. I have paid faithfully into the Banfield Premium Wellness Plan for multiple animals over the past 12 years – never had an outstanding balance. Unfortunately, one of our dogs had some chronic medical issues which required specialist care not covered in the plan, so for much of his last year or two we primarily used the specialists but kept his plan active still “just in case” since he had had it since he was 4 months old. Well, unfortunately, he passed suddenly from a stroke a month or two after it renewed; and, as others have referenced, their defense is “it is on the contract” citing it does not make an exception for death. The rep... Read More

This Warwick facility and their Banfield Hospital health care plan is good in theory for healthy pets and if you do not need their services in any kind of hurry, such as with a sick animal. They certainly are not a "hospital"in the true sense and that is very misleading. Recently I had a very sick pet and they could not get me in for over a week and that was just a drop off, where I could not go in with my pet during the visit. I was refused an earlier appointment from the doctors as well. The Johnston store did accomodate me within 24 hours, and as it turned out misdiagnosed my pet putting her through 4 unnecessary days of sickness before she was euthanized at a proper animal hospital.... Do not use Banfield Wellness Plan. After spending thousands of dollars to try to save our beloved pet. We canceled our plan because our companion passed away and Banfield tried to charge us an additional $459.00 because we renewed our plan. If you use Banfield, just know that you will not be able to talk with a vet and you will not be with your pet when they are being examined. Your pet will be taken to a back room and a vet tech will talk with you. If you love your pet - do NOT use Banfield!

The Banfield close to our home shut down and have been calling every Banfield that is within a reasonable driving distance only to be told they have no idea when they will have an availability. When I reach out to them to cancel my policy since I won't be using it they want to charge me all this money when it is not my fault that i need to cancel. They are not even taking walk ins and will have to pay a full emergency cost instead of using his insurance at Banfield.

Adopted a new 8 week old kitten. A couple of days later it had diarrhea, so took it to Banfield veterinary services. One of the techs said I should get the wellness plan from them to save a lot of money. Well it does not save you any money! They had my kitten for the whole day. They did a fecal test and a exam. The fecal test was negative and the exam was good. Gave the kitten a deworm, an antibiotic and anti diarrhea meds. Told me to give the kitten a gastrointestinal kitten food. Vet said bring him back in one week. Second appointment had the kitten all day again. Did another fecal exam that was negitive and this time said the kitten had something in his ear. Should have caught this in... Read More

STAY AWAY - They forced me to upgrade my plan to include X-Rays and then charged me another $100 to 'read' them. The vet said they had to send them out to a specialist. Turns out, it simply went to a different vet at Banfield. CROOKS!!!!

they are charging me for the year for my pet who died in February! Why would anyone continue to pay for service they will never get if your pet died.
