Banfield Pet Hospital is a nationwide network of over 900 pet hospitals that offers an Optimum Wellness plan instead of traditional accident and illness pet insurance.

The plan offers in hospital services designed to diagnose, treat and prevent future medical conditions.

These include head to tail exams, nutritional consultations, and dental care.

Overall Rating: 2.3 / 5 (Average)

Banfield Pet Hospital offers an "Optimum Wellness Plan" which allows unlimited wellness visits to any of the numerous nationwide Banfield facilities.

This is a pro-active approach to identify potential problems in your dog or cat before they start.

This is indeed a great idea, but seeing as no one can predict a serious accident, at least an accident-only plan is warranted.

And since Banfield does not provide this, you'll have to get a separate plan from another carrier.

Banfield Pet Hospital Coverage

Coverage - 2.5 / 5

Banfield Pet Hospital does not offer pet insurance rather an "Optimum Wellness Plan."

This is a preventative program that covers your dog or cat for head-to-tail exams, vaccines, early screening diagnostics, consultations for proper nutrition, and dental care at any of the more than 900 Banfield locations across the US and Puerto Rico.

The wellness coverage is unparalleled protection, and also includes unlimited office visits.

However, it can run around the same price as comprehensive accident and illness policies from pet insurance providers.

Banfield operates 3 levels of wellness coverage.

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 2 / 5

Similarly there is no reimbursement percentage as this is not pet insurance.

Your Banfield discount membership entitles you to 100% coverage of all the routine and preventative care associated with your plan level.

Deductibles - 3.5 / 5

There are no deductibles associated with care under Banfield's Optimum Wellness Plan, just a membership fee.

All procedures are covered 100% depending on your membership level.

Pricing: How much does Banfield Pet Hospital cost?

Cost - 2 / 5

Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans are, by and large, a little less expensive that fully comprehensive pet insurance plans that do not include wellness.

A Banfield plan may be an ideal addition to an accident only plan from another provider in order to ensure complete coverage.

What's more, it is significantly more convenient than reimbursement-model wellness plans as they will have all your info at the hospital of your choice and there will be no claim process.

The wellness plan is a joke. We have had the plan for over 10 years and our dog died this month. When I emailed them to cancel the plan they informed us that we would have to pay over $900 to get out of the plan or continue to pay the monthly installments for another 7 months. This is advertised as insurance, but is just a scam.

If you care anything about your pet stay far away from this place! It's a scam! They care very little about your pet, and a lot about money. I took my bulldog in to get his puppy shots and ended up paying over $500!! Stay FAR away!

If I could give Bansfield Wellness Plan a zero I would. I have 2 yorkies and was looking for affordable pet insurance. Suffice it to say, getting the plan cost me so much more in the long run. Getting an appointment that fit my needs was impossible. I work full time and Bansfield Soho in NYC could never accommodate me. They recommended I visit any other location. One of my pets became very ill. I took him to the Secaucus location. Worst experience ever. After waiting 3 hours, I was told I couldn't be seen because the Vet on call was too busy. I took my fur baby to Metrovet and thankfully was able to get him the medical attention he needed. My bill was over $400 and because I went outside... Read More

We've been on their wellness plan for a year and a half. We like the fact that the program is preventative care as oppposed to "help my dog is sick". The veterinarians are educated from all over the world. They are very attentive and obviously care for our dog. I highly recommend this as opposed to insurance. This is the way humans should be treated as well. Preventative instead of reactionary.

After being checked in for his yearly wellness visit, the vet walked in, did not even glance at my dog, and immediately started selling me to renew the wellness plan for next year. I thought last year when it happened it was just a fluke, but apparently this is their business model. They do not care, at all, about your pet. They only care about roping you in for a guarantee of monthly payments for the next year. I felt like I was in front of a car salesman, not my pet's Doctor. A good salesman would have at least "pretended" to examine my dog before telling me what I need for next year. After all, it is included in my current PAID wellness plan.

They're not ever there for you when you have a real emergency. My chihuahua broken her left front leg above the wrist area! Called them and they say go to another. Never can walk in like they advertise, and on top of that they will charge you a one time fee every time you pay it in full instead of paying every month. Look out for this clause, if your dog dies, no refunds, but if you're paying monthly. Get this you have to keep paying for the insurance, and is not transferable to a new dog or cat. This is the worst insurance anyone can by. I did it twice, but believe me, I will not do it again!!!! Yes, it has unlimited office visit, if you can get in for an appointment, otherwise, your... I feel that they are a big ripoff! I noticed prior to joining, how the staff was very warm and friendly towards me on my first visit with my puppy! After joining on my second visit ,it was totally different and the staffs attitude was no way the same as before! They were not friendly and less accommodating ! I was unhappy with the Dr.and after experiencing a incident with my puppy there who was only 2lbs and less then 15 wks old? I left and transferred to another clinic. After going to the new one all they kept on insisting for me to change my plan that would include neutering! I kept telling them he is still too young and I want to wait till he's a little older! Everytime i go there... Read More

They raise the prices of absolutely every procedure/medication and then say you're getting a discount. The final price is still much higher than you'd pay at any other vet. They are good for wellness visits ONLY. If your pet is sick or needs treatment or medication they fully take advantage of you and expect more and more money. Your current plan never seems to be good enough and you're constantly being told you have to "upgrade" to the next plan, and the next, and the next. STAY AWAY unless you only need a wellness vet.

My 13 year old Basset Hound was diagnosed with Lymphoma a few weeks ago. We've taken her to Banfield the entire 13 years. Over the past few days she's gotten worse, having trouble breathing. When I called on Sunday, I was told there were no appointments available. I finally convinced them to see her. She was prescribed a cough medicine. It didn't help, so I called back on Tuesday. I was told that they'd see if the Vet needed to see her. I waited several hours for a call back and it didn't come. I called back again and was told we could come get a Prescription for another cough med. She continued to get worse, so I called them back yesterday. I was told there was only one Vet in and no... I had my pet on their ,"plan" for 5 years. Big waste of $ but I love my dog. When I started shopping around I found better plans for less $. The staff at the Banfield in Santa Cruz have been awesome. The corporation has not been so. I will get Happy Paws or Nationwide catastrophic ins. For less and it covers more of the stuff we might need, like catastrophic coverage. For a ,"Pet Hospital" they do have to ,"refer" a lot if services to other Vets. Which doesn't really qualify a business as a hospital. You can get better for less. Shop around.
