Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

Worst warranty company in the world!!!!! I have been paying them for two years and when time came to fix my issue it was a worse nightmare of my life. I had to make 30 calls and every time they tried to find a reason to deny my claim. In addition, their contractors were not very good. The fourth contractor was able to diagnose my problem but charged me saying that warranty company doesn't pay us enough so I had to pay to get me problem fixed. What a scam they are running. Shame on First American Home Buyer Protection. They are only protection their bottom lies. Stay away from them. In addition, there phone lines are very bad and its really hard to understand the rep on the other... Read More

It seems most items are not covered. We have made 3 claims over the last couple of years and each were determined by First American to be excluded from coverage. One was for an refrigerator that is located outside of the main home. The other was for our zoned HVAC system. Apparently the zone controller is not covered for some reason that was not disclosed. Apparently this is a common exclusion. the third was for our washing machine. It was claimed we abused the machine by over filling it and the coverage was waved. The fact that the bearings on the machine have failed is an extremely common occurrence with this particular machine was an argument that fell on deaf ears. It makes... Read More

By far one of the most unprofessional companies i have ever had to deal with. have spent over 50+ hours on the phone. with no results. The plummer that was sent to my house came fully unprepared to do the job and was going to have me send 3,000+ dollars to remove a wall to access a clogged shower valve. Prior to spending that amount of money i found a simple procedure on line that unclogged the valve with in 15 minuets. My water heater was also leaking per their contractor and my own contractor which they refused to replace. because of age??? So i replaced it and attempting to get reimbursed for the repair. I have made over 50 phone calls and followed their direction with no resolution... Read More

My husband and I are first-time homebuyers and the whole process was a bit overwhelming (not to mention doing it all with a 1-year-old boy). The oven in our home was outdated but that wasn’t what was important in our purchase. We wanted a place with a backyard that we could call home. When the oven door spontaneously broke and busted, we didn’t think anything of it…just part of being home owners, we thought. But the previous owner came to visit us and suggested we contact our home warranty. Frankly, we had forgotten we had a warranty, and filled with hope, we called First American. They were very nice and immediately put our claim through. However, it has been an unnecessary nightmare... Read More

Awful company! I have had them for the last nine years and suddenly in the last 18 months I have had two claims and their contractors were terrible. I have currently been without a working furnace for 20 days since the first contractor came on the 1/18 and told me he would only replace the covered part if I replaced a gas line (that was replaced in the last 18mos) that wasn't covered for 200.00. I asked him to leave my home and called First American back and they sent a new contractor out to my home which informed me the first contractor had taken the ignition bracket out of my furnace and it was nowhere to be found in my attic. Without this part my furnace can't be repaired. FAHBP... Read More

On hold with First American Home warranty for the last 30 minutes, before this spoke with three very INCOMPETENT representatives at this company who are trying to explain to me that when a plumber comes to my house to fix a leaking pipe, the plumber is not responsible for access to the pipe as it's not covered by their "warranty", according to these idiots, apparently, I'm responsible for opening the drywall for their plumber and I'm responsible for fixing the drywall. Unheard of!!! And this is the 2nd service call for the same problem, the 1st "plumber" came in, spent about 10 seconds looking at the shower, completely misdiagnosed the problem, told me it's not covered by the home warranty... I have had this warranty for 3 years now. When I first purchased it I thought overall they did a fairly decent job responding to request.as the years have gone by they have progreeively gotten worse. Hold times are in excess of 1 hour to try to speak with someone is nearly impossible.they will not allow the contractor who comes out o fix the problem. Instead they tie his hands and make him diagnose the problem and submit a report to them. Then they take 2-3 business days to decide if they are going to cover the repair it. Took me 3 weeks to get my washing machine repaired. Do yourself a favor and don't deal with these clowns. I am canceling just as soon as my contract expires and signing... Read More

First American Home Buyers Protection borderlines on a criminal business. Their business practices related to filing claims and customer service is deplorable. I am of the opinion they make the process so negative for the consumer, so the consumer will give up on going through the warranty company and seek other means for getting issues resolved in order to decrease the amount of money paid out for claims. The hot water heater stopped function early one morning. I immediately called the home warranty company to begin the claims process. I waited all day and checked the status online and determined a contractor had not been assigned. I called 2 more times that evening to request a... Read More
