Choice Home Warranty is a New Jersey-based company founded in 2008 which offers services contracts. Their plans offer protection against the cost of repair or replacement of major systems and appliances in the home via several plans. In addition to a monthly premium, customers can expect to pay an $85 service fee each time they make a claim, which falls in low-to-mid range when compared to other home warranty companies.

You can submit a claim 24/7, including holidays, via phone, online, or app. The company utilizes proprietary technology to begin the dispatching process after a claim is filed. Choice Home Warranty offers existing homeowners two plans, each of which cover a mix of systems and appliances. The primary difference between its Total plan and its Basic plan is that refrigerators, washers and dryers, and air conditioning systems are not included in the Basic Plan. Optional coverage for such items as pools and spas, well pumps, and septic systems is available for an additional fee. The company states that, in any case, its total liability for any single item is capped at $3000, but lower limits do apply to some covered items.

We requested a quote for a single family home of less than 5000 square feet in a small midwestern city. The premium for Choice Home Warranty's Basic was $47.85 per month and the premium for its Total pan was $54.95 per month. With the cost difference between the two plans being only about $7 per month, to our mind, the Total plan a better value overall because it includes coverage for three of the most common appliances: refrigerators, washers, and dryers. It also includes coverage for air conditioning systems.

The company's co-pay for a service call is $85, slightly less than most comparable companies. The co-pay may be reduced further with special discounts and promotions.

Cancellation Policy

The contract shall be non-cancelable by the company except for nonpayment of contract fees or service fees, fraud or misrepresentation of facts by the customer, or by agreement between client and company. Customers may cancel within the first 30 days of the order date for a full refund of the paid contract fees. If canceled after 30 days, the customer shall be entitled to a pro rata refund of the paid contract fee for the unexpired term, less a $50 administrative fee and any service costs incurred by the company.

I’m not very much impressed with their range of coverage. I had compressive coverage but most of the appliances are covered for only few parts. For example garage door is covered but not it’s spring, heating/cooling covered but not it’s plumbing although plumbing is also mentioned separately in the coverage, same with sump pump. I ended up paying money out of my pocket to get repairs done because they were not covered. So, I would rather pay money for repairs only than paying for both. This coverage might be suitable for other consumers but it doesn’t suit my needs. I would like a comprehensive coverage where I don’t need to know the nitty gritty of an appliance. On Wednesday a technician was sent to my home to service my washer. The appointment time was between 3pm and 8pm. I thought that was a bit of a gap but o well. He arrived around 5ish and diagnosed my problem. He then told me what the problem was. He was friendly and professional. Two days later Choice Home Warranty sent me an email and offered me 2 options. I selected one. I just feel if you have a problem the timeframe for the solution is too long. 30+ days. But otherwise I guess they are okay.

The first company that was sent out to look at my electrical Stover’s electric company did not show up and would not return phone calls In my opinion and Customer service they deserve is zero. The new gentleman who came out and did the work showed up when he said he would and did a good job I answered all of my questions.

I called once to fix a ceiling fan that had electrical sparks when the lightbulb was turned on. The repairman fixed it when he said the electrical connections were wrong. I have called the service again to fix my dishwasher. The repairman found it was a malfunctioning part and ordered one. We are now waiting for him to return tomorrow to install it. I also made another claim to fix a sluggish air conditioner.
