Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Hello, I have had American Home Shield for over 12years.. I must say today was the worst service ever. Despite all the negative talk about AHS on TV i kept this company, but after today I will re think that. Your Customer Service Rep had me on hold over 30mins( Lester) to speak to a rep. I have been without Air since Friday and now they are telling me it will be 3 to 5 days before the parts will make it in. I have also been told I cant change vendors. I would like to speak to a supervisor but of course no rep will allow you to speak to one. Is there a policy with your company about speaking to a manager??? I wouldnt recommend your service to anyone..

I initially submitted a service order online in Jan for my furnace that was out, it was approximately 13 degrees outside and a Saturday Morning. I never heard from them after my submission, several hours later I called, they said they don't work weekends. I explained the situation and the weather and they said I had to wait 4 hrs for the previously chosen provider to respond to an afterhours call. At 4 hrs I had to call AHS back to get a status, then was told to wait another 2 hrs to see if they could find another provider. Another 2hrs later I called back again to get a status and was told they couldn't find anyone to work it and that I should call to find my own provider. At this... Read More

After a negative experience with Paul's Appliance Repair in Bryan, TX I read the reviews. They are typically 1/5 stars all for the same reason. It's unbelievable that AHS would continue to contract with them after all the complaints. I called AHS to give feedback and after talking with Customer Service I have been on hold for 10 min--the agent saying she had to review notes but seems to have disappeared. Between Paul's Appliance and AHS this morning I've now been consumed for 2.5 hours that I don't have to spare and the situation is far from resolved. This aggravation is unprofessional and not worth the annual price to continue my home contract. Update--the phone just cut out so no... Read More

I have called several times but for urgent and sanitary type issues the service is just awful. They may have only like 1 contractor within 24-48 miles and if they are booked then you have to wait days up to a week to get immediate issues repair. Plumbing & water leaking is very urgent and refrigeration problems should NOT be scheduled out beyond 24 hrs. This is just unsanitary and unacceptable. Shameful actually. Who goes without water being turned on for 2+ days??? They gotta do much better than this. You wind up paying out of your own pocket and paying an arm n a leg to get service sooner. They are a huge co and can get more alternate contractors or at least pay for the immediate... Read More

It's been two weeks without my dryer. Two visits from techs, both not fixing it because they say the same thing. Too expensive to fix. AHS keeps jerking me around. Everyday I call they say 24 more hours for their authorization department. TWO WEEKS and it's still going to be how many more "24 hours"???

My monthly payment has gone up every year of this contract. I’ve been a customer for 8 years and now my payment is $79 a month. I called and ask why so high and they acted like take it or cancel.

I don’t even know where to start... Thank god the sellers paid for a year of service in our closing agreement. After dealing with them on a broken AC, I would never pay for their service with my own money. Call center outsourced to India (go figure) difficult to speak with and understand them. Beside that the service is complete garbage. They will have a bottom of the barrel contractor come out and “bandaid” your appliance over and over and over again so they don’t have to pay for replacement, while charging you an $80 service charge each time. Way cheaper to just pay for a replacement yourself (and save your service charges and yearly fee money). Word to the wise, unless AHS is included... Read More

Start off good and then they will fall off. A/C will put some freon you are charged the rest and for technicians to come out. May as well pay yourself. Had them for five years cancelled them in March and they took money in April and May. Due a refund but wait... No record of cancelation and then charged me $50.00 for cancelling... Swithing to Choice!

This is my second year with America Home Shield and I have paid 2 years worth of replacement cost contracts. 2 days ago my pool pump was making a screaming screeching noise that was defining, I called and reported the service call and the pool company came out to check on pump. The technician said that it was the bearings and for the contract to cover the problem had to be total motor failure for them to replace my pump. The pump is so loud you cannot sit by the pool or have company over in my opinion the pump is not working as it should. America Home Shields reps just kept reading from a script in my opinion and said according to the contract they would not replace the motor. In my... Read More

American Home Shield has provided very poor service for us on two separate claims. The first was a sump pump that wore out. They committed to replace the pump. It took almost 6 months and repeated telephone calls to finally get the pump replaced. Next we had the upper and lower level trays wear out in our dishwasher. This took place over time after we purchased the home. Because we eventually threw away some of the plastic pieces as they wore out, they denied the claim saying all of the parts were not there. Worse yet, it took over a month to discover why they denied our claim and so we have gone almost 2 months without a dishwasher. Please avoid them.
