Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Do Not WAIST YOUR MONEY!!! I wish I could give them a zero review! We had a hole in our microwave inner door as well as a washing machine that smelled like burning electric wire when not even fully loaded. I opened a service request after calling several times. I took a day off from work to be home and the technician did not come that day! I had to reschedule it for another day, took another half day off and a technician who could hardly communicate in English came and looked at both appliances and said he will send us the report. Obviously they called me and told that nothing is covered as a hole in the microwave door (with steam and food trapped in it) is an cosmetic problem!!!! They... Read More

Terrible service. I waited 8 hours for the tech to come out and he was there 10 minutes. Needed a compressor on my air unit. 5 days later I called American Home Shield and the girl told me i needed to take the unit apart and get the model number and make of the unit so it could be replaced. I told her that no I shouldn't have to take the unit apart to get a part number for her the tech should have that number so she ask for me to be on hold while she checked. I could hear here coming on and off the line, i think she was waiting for me to give up and click off of the line. about 10 minute later she disconnected me. I had to call the tech and have them get a hold of AHS to get it done. The... Read More

STAY AWAY!!! I've had multiple homes previously with AHS and had good experiences, not now!!! Whether pool, electrical, or any other service, AHS constantly looks for ways not to cover, claiming "not caused by normal wear and tear." Example: I paid for additional coverage for my salt water pool. The heater developed a leak and died. The first technician said it was due to rodent damage. Denied coverage. Since the heater electrical was fine, and the heater is made of copper and aluminum, no way it was rodent damage. Called for a second opinion. Second technician said definitely not rodent repair, it was due to a leak that developed over time due to chemicals in the water. AHS said that is... Read More

Worse consonant ever beware! Don’t waste your time and money! I wish I would have read these reviews before I bought into it! Pay for you own repairs worth the money. These people are terrible to their customers and their contracts hate them as well! I went 6 weeks in June and July with no air but my hands were tied because I had coverage and wanted to use what I paid for. Not asking much. DO NOT USE THEM! Zero should be the rating!

I have waited over 30 days for an AC unit to be replaced. Even though you are supposedly to only pay the fee for the company to come out, I am having to pay an additional $500 for the company to come out. AHS has authorized the company to charge me $180 for a locking cap that can be bought from any vendor for about $5.00. I will also have to pay $280 for a condenser stand even though I already have one in excellent condition. The vendor stated that they have a contract with AHS that allows them to charge the exorbitant price to make up for the low amount that AHS reimburses them. So, everything from AHS is a scam. They tell you that you will pay a one time fee but then they will... Read More

We have had American Home Shield for 3 years now. The first year it more than paid for itself on 2 separate washing machine repair. The second year we had no incidents. This year we just had them out for a refrigerator ice maker line repair, where they had to replace the whole line unit. Never any problem, they use quality repair businesses. First two repairs were by Sears and the one this year was Whirlpool. I would definitely recommend them.

When you buy the warrantee you reach America and they are friendly. When you need service that's when you were screwed talking to people in the Philippines who don't know their ass from their elbow. Then when you finally get a hold of someone in the US they promised to call you back but never do. I am without the proper air-conditioning for 11 days in this heat in Florida I highly recommend do not go with a company like this. Do you know how to sound friendly when you call them to buy a warranty after that it's hell

If you have lots of time to spend waiting to speak to the appropriate person and given misleading information, this company is a fit. If you want to wait weeks for a parts to facilitate repair, only to have your phone call ignore by the repair company, reiterating, this is the company.

I had to give a one star rating, but the deserve a ZERO!!! Absolutely, the worst company ever!!! It really feels like they are scam artist!!! The customer service is horrible and service people are incompetent!!! I placed my initial service call for my washer/dryer back in March and four months later, after 4 service visits and several calls (including speaking with a couple of supervisors) my washer/dryer is now completely out. I’ve been waiting for a week now for a new tech to come out, they have yet to respond to my phone calls and messages. I’ve followed up with AHS yesterday, you confirmed someone from the company would call me yesterday to come up and service the unit. Of course,... Read More

Worst Company ever!!! Had to wait 1 1/2 month for a part for my washer. Tried to call them to find out about my issue. Was on hold for 2 hours and got hung up on 3 times.
