Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

This company is nothing but FRAUD! I had my AC repaired on 9/20/19 which cost me over $800.00 to repair (which took 2 weeks to get them to come out because they were waiting for part from AHS) and after all that it was still was not working. I called on 9/20/19 to AHS because the service tech said my Evaporator Coil needed to repaired. The AHS lady I spoke to with the service tech said it was covered and he could repair it and did not need to change the original invoice. He needed to come back to repair as it was late. I got a call from his office stating when they called AHS they said it wasn't covered. So I called again and the person stated it wasn't covered. So on 9/21/19 I... Read More

I have had AHS for 13 years & have had approximately 5 service calls. The company during that time was prompt in fixing or replacing the broken items immediately with no problems. I would classify them as one of the top companies in the field...…..NOT ANYMORE! They have outsourced their customer service overseas & everything has gone down hill since then. The representatives that answer the phone when you call can not understand you (or pretend to) and you can not understand them. Or, they will put you on hold while they are supposedly checking with another representative and completely forget about you, or they will hang up on you, or you will be so frustrated that you hang up on... We have been a customer of American Home Shield for 30 years , our original contract covered many items. They have changed the contracts to cover very little now and to need a picture from the contractor they send , then you must wait for days to get an approval or not. It took over a week for me to get a small plumping issues request for repair denied. I then had to call our local plumber to repair it. The repair took 15 minutes and cost almost as much as my monthly fee and service fee. Then when I called to cancel my contract I was told I had to pay a cancellation fee. They have a terrible customer service response system, and treat long time customers poorly. Don't waste your money on... Read More

I dropped this company years ago every time I called about something needing fixing ,they always would come back with some lame excuse that the part I needed wasn’t covered .In my opinion take the money and save it in a jar every month ,so when something needs fixing you’ll be able to get it fixed ,because in my opinion this company is very very unethical .

In a single word, this company American Home Shield (AHS) STINKS! Other words to describe them: unethical, awful, pathetic, lacking empathy, inadequate ... I'm sure you get the gist ...

Horrible company STAY AWAY!! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!! AHS - American Home Shield first sent us their sub contractor upon opening a service request. After making several calls and leaving 3 voice messages they finally called back after 3 days and said they do not service refrigerators. Then we called back and the sent another company. Same thing after repeated calls and leaving voice messages they gave an appointment. Tech showed up and said he cannot do anything and AHS will not cover anything because it is old Fridge and to call LG directly to see if they can help. Called LG support and they said Fridge is covered and they will send certified tech and he will replace the compressor... Read More

I have contacted your company at least six times regarding the billing. I have been told by several representatives that the account would be corrected. This started in January of 2019 and a spoke again to a representative that said the account would be taken care of as of today. It is 9:04 pm eastern time and it has not been corrected. This is very disappointing because I have now been told eleven times the same lie. My account needs to be corrected immediately. Push the correct key on the computer please. It does not take eight months to fix an account.

I am very frustrated right now! My refrigerator and cook top range issues have not been resolved yet. It has been more than 3 weeks and the associates repeat the same old story " I will take this personally and call you back by the end of the day" end of the day never comes and it is back to square one. Can't speak to a manager or supervisor. All they have is an escalation specialist who is like an associate with a different title. Worst resolutions ever.

This is the worst company I have ever had to deal with!!! You can NEVER EVER speak to a supervisor or manager, you can not even get transferred to another department!! The reps have to send emails to each other promising someone will call you back in 24-48 hours and THAT NEVER EVER HAPPENS!! SO DISGUSTED WITH THIS MESS!! I HAVE BEEN WAITING OVER A MONTH TO GET MY CHECK FOR MY HVAC AND STILL NOT A PHONE CALL, EMAIL OR NOTHING,.... JUST WAITING FOR THE RESEARCH TEAM TO CALL ME NOW TO LET ME KNOW WHERE THE HELL MY CHECK WENT!! DONT EVER USE THIS COMPANY
