Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I have AHS off and on for about 10 years and the're the best. I never had an issue and promises kept on sending experts to fix problems I've had. Excellent company to have with piece of mind when something happens in the house.

We have American Home Shield on three houses, and have always been pleased with your service, but twice in one week, we have asked for a supervisor to return our call, and both times assured they would, and yet no phone call. We have had to wait two weeks for a part to our air conditioning, and the repairman says it took a long time for you to approve the part and longer for you to order it. Beverly Gregory Amarillo, Tx. Your customer service is horrible.

POOR customer service - wait time to talk to someone has been over 2 hours - tried twice today. They closed a service request, asked for a survey and the issue has not been fixed or resolved. No place to see how it was resolved on my account even though their incessant recordings say I can get my answers there. "This service request has been closed" does NOTHING to tell me how it was resolved, especially since my dishwasher sits unusable.

I just moved into my home about 2 weeks ago and unfortunately went with American Home Shield. Once we moved in, I called and paid for our warranty. For the past 3 days I have been try to submit a service request, but cannot because online it shows I have not paid. Even though I have paid for the full warranty. I have been on hold for over two hours each time I have called. When I finally get through to talk to someone, they say they cannot help and then switch me to a totally unrelated department that also cannot help me. I have spent over 6 hours trying to get help and nothing has been resolved. So now I paid $650 for a company I cannot even get service through. I would HIGHLY recommend... Read More

This started at least a week ago when leaks in my pool equipment were identified. AHS assigned a company that has helped me before and done good work to address the problem. An appointment was set early the next week and the tech arrived and addressed two of the three problems. He said he needed access to his warehouse to fix the third leak, which was from the manifold of my heater. Several days later he finally called me indicating that AHS had denied the claim to fix this leak, and that someone would call me to explain. I am still waiting for that explanation.

Pros: filing a claim process - requires only a few clicks on their website, then the service company schedules times with you directly Cons: if resolution cannot be made on service company's first visit, the process after that is a challenge and can turn into a game of ping pong between the service company and AHS - if a new unit is needed, AHS goes out of their way to prove that is necessary before approving.

For most of our items they were very good. We had a washing machine that they came back 9 times to fix. That is over 9 weeks without a washer. It broke again. When I asked them to cash out for the washer, they gave me a run around. After 4 different calls, with them saying they would call back to settle, which they never did, I gave up and purchased a washing machine. I wasn't going without a washing machine again.

Great company, Great and prompt service and wonderful follow-up. I've used them for years and they have never let me down. They even replaced my washing machine when it broke down.

We were very disappointed with home shield warranty. We had it on our house, as well as our rent house. We had a different home warranty before home shield. Found out after they took money out of our account for about 8 months that they didn't have venders in our location. That was the first question we asked home shield. If they had companies in our area, that we didn't want to pay out money to them, then pay for repair also. They assured us they did. All lies. We paid one of their vendors twice because they didn't have the means to check our ductwork from heat & air. We ask for them to send someone different, since they didn't have a camera to check it. They wouldn't do it. So... Read More
