Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

The technician was prompt, courteous, and knowledgeable. Parts needed to be ordered and the tech said they would arrive in 2 days. Two days later the tech called and said the parts had arrived. We set an appointment and again the tech was on time and completed the repair in a timely fashion. Very pleased with the service. Also very pleased with American Home Shield. We have been customers for 17 years and have had no complaints in that entire time.

If I could chose no stars I would. Do not get a home warranty with American home shield. Their customer service is horrible. If you have a service request that has not been fixed you will not be able to speak with a live person to get the issue resolved. The hold times are over a hour. The people sent to service my home had less than a year experience.

First time reviewing a company but have never encountered a bigger scam than American Home Shield. I had a warranty with them for a year and a half and never used it, renewed it for a second year and shortly after air conditioner stopped working. To make a very long story short, I spent the next month(30+ days) dealing with two of the most unprofessional, rude, incompetent companies(both 1 star yelp review) I have ever dealt with. I sat on hold for over an hour everytime I called AHS and then spoke with a customer service rep who was never helpful and never followed up with me, I spent $75 on a service call, $230 on freon, and then was told if I spent another $1300 on freon the ac "might"... How can this be a TOP 10 company? Because they paid to be in their top 1! Notice the fine print. Pros: a lot of people have signed up with this company. Cons: apparently too many because they cant handle the volume. My AC went out this past Sunday. I put in a service call online before 8AM Monday. Was given a service time of FRIDAY before anyone could be out to fix it. It was 89 degrees in the house that afternoon. Called a local company they were out here Wednesday afternoon. I am now enjoying 72 degrees. Called and cancelled my ahs service call. Wednesday evening my stove and oven stopped working. What the heck, that's my luck, right, hence the reason I have a home warranty. Placed a... Read More

Everything was handled really well. I would have given 5 stars however because our dryer wasn't working, it took the repair company a long time to come and look at the dryer, then it took a long time to order the part needed. Would have liked it to be a quicker turnaround.

I called customer service and was on hold for over 30 minutes. I call to pretend as if I'm renewing, they answer in 2 minutes. This happened 3 TIMES IN A ROW. So you let your existing customers wait on hold, but answer promptly for new inquiries? Great way to boost customer retention. I've yet to speak with anyone in customer service - all your sales reps do is pass the buck and say all they can do is escalate me to customer service. One had the nerve to ask me to hold to see if she could do anything for me - what she really did was just transfer me to customer service where I waited on hold for another 20 minutes without a response. My contract has expired since I initiated this... Read More

the service was slow and now a few weeks later; its still not working right and when I told ... I was told I'd have to open a new ticket. So the point of AHS is killed because I end up having to pay as much for the service I think as if I just hired someone who'd stand up behind the work better. I appreciate what AHS is trying to do. But it kinda... im probably going to cancel the service now. It does not pay off.
