Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

We started our home warranty after a recommendation from a friend. So far we've had a minor inexpensive claim paid and a major expensive claim denied. I'm also not a fan of not being able to choose the company I want to work with. Sending their people out to check out the situation is great but it seems as if those people are strictly working for them and not so much the actual customer. At this point I'm not sure that we will continue our coverage if this is what we will have to deal with. It's not that we don't like this company or the idea of what it actually does. I would feel better about it if they gave us as the customers a little more say.

Not real happy with the accounting department of AMS. I had a service call back in May and paid the contractor the $75 service fee with a check the day he came to my house. AMS sent me an invoice showing I hadn't paid. I called AMS and they confirmed with the contractor that I had paid and said they could clear it up in the computer but it would take about a week. 2 weeks later I rec and email and called again to be told that it was taken care of. In July I need an A/C service call and tried to request online but couldn't because there was an issue with my acct. I had to call. I was on hold for 47 min to find out that the outstanding $75 was still showing on my acct. I was told again that... Read More

Awful, horrible experiences from the time I started with AHS to the end which was about 3 years. Customer service was hard to get even for the contractor that arrived at the house. We spend hours on the phone when placing a call. AHS made statements that they did not live up to when it came to fixing things. Getting local businesses to work with AHS was very few in my area. Most businesses refuse to work with AHS. I give them 1/2 star and that's generous. AHS was terrible. My AC unit still isn't working properly. I will be contacting the BBB about my service also.

I live in Phoenix Arizona currently inside my house it is 105 degrees. I placed a service request and was assigned a repair company on July 14. Bottom line this a/c company doesn't return calls and doesn't answer emails. Now we just got a second company assigned and they can't come until July 31. I have two kids, 5 dogs, two cats, fish and birds. My house has computers and a refrigerator close to over heating. I have been a customer for many years mainly because of possible a/c break down. I am wonder why I have this warranty if all involved has to endure this heat and humidity. This service company, AHS, is all that they do. Integerity and service needs to your customer should be your... Read More

They claim to be the best home warranty company but actually they are the worst! To call customer service you need to wait minimum 2 hours! If you want to wait only one hour call after 12am! They use the worst possible contractors who need even written permission to breathe! For every job a contractor will come at least 2/3 times then only your work will be half done! Contractors say each and every step needs to be approved by AHS. I HAD TO SUFFER 98* FOR ENTIRE WEEK FOR THE CONTRACTOR TO TELL ME THAT HE NEEDS TO CLEAN COIL ON MY CENTRAL AC WHICH OTHER COMPANIES (HORIZON, C&C AND A.J.PERRI) told to replace. Even for my pool filter pump it took the contractor 10 days to fix a very small... Read More

I have needed to use my American Home Shield Home Warranty service two times this year. Both times the process for requesting service through the website was very user friendly and I recieved prompt notification of receipt of my request and follow-up emails & text messages with information for the vendor who would be providing service. The vendor followed through in a timely manner. They were professional and very knowlegeable. I appreciate knowing that American Home Shield has vetted and provides quality companies to fulfill the service needs of me, their customer.

This has been a constant battle. It should not be like this. I requested service and received a name of a provider, Eco Systems that would come out to fix our heater. First problem, they couldn't come out for 2 weeks. Other AHS providers came out within 2 days. When it was determined that the circuit board was bad Eco Systems said they needed to get approval from ASH to replace it. Second Problem, that took another 2 weeks. The Third and Fourth problem came from Eco Systems when they canceled the installation on the day of two times and it was a week to two weeks between dates. The customer service at Eco Systems is horrible. Absolutly horrible. I was asked to pay $1,875 for my share of... Read More
