Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I have used the web site to request service ,which is great for non emergency jobs. If you need emergency repairs you are out of luck because on the web site there is no way to get immediate help. Second, when you call the average wait time to speak to customer service is at 40 - 50 minutes. then you have to at times call back and have a correction made top the work order which again you wait 40 or more minutes on line. The special skill people are very good and on time and get the job done. some of the best service I have ever received.

Have had AHS since 2009. The monthly fee keeping going up and their service keeps getting worse. I have been waiting over a week now to get my oven and refrigerator repaired. The contractor AHS sent out, Pro Appliance, Largo, FL, has an F rating at BBB. I called AHS to let them know that this kind of service is unacceptable. Trying to get through to someone at AHS is ridiculous. Every time I call AHS it takes at least 45mins on hold to get through to someone. When I finally did get through to a manager to request another contractor other than the F rated Pro Appliance company they use, the AHS manager was rude and uncooperative. Still waiting for Pro Appliance to get the parts to... Read More

I'm looking to change services. 1 hour wait times to speak with someone to report a repair need. Several days, up to a week to get a repairman out. They keep telling us we owe them our monthly payment which they take automatically every month and then they admit we have paid but I've had to wait on the phone for an hour to speak with someone. Repair people have been good once they get here. but I'm tired of this company and their hour long wait times. I will take my three homes somewhere else.

This is considered the #1 home warranty company for 2017??? I can't even speak to a real person, everything is now automated. I'm paying nearly $600 annually to American Home Sheild, have a refrigerator problem going on with food spoiling...and noone can bother to speak to me there when needed??? How disgusting and discouraging this is!

First, you need to hire more people to handle the calls coming in. You make customers wait for over an hour. Secondly, when an appliance needs replacement, you don't receive what is comprable to what the customer has already, you give us the cheapest appliance on the market. That is wrong, and I'm surprised that you're not out of business by now. Shame on you!

So once again, American Home Shield has crap customer service at work again. I was on hold for about 2hrs the first time trying to get them out for an AC service. There was a $75 credit for services that was supposed to be used for this call. Looks like they "ACCIDENTALLY" forgot to apply it. Now, the only option is to call vs email? Yeah right! Stay on hold another 2 hrs?!?!?!

The telephone wait times are unacceptable. 1 hour is way too long. Especially when you are calling back on a tech that didn't know what he was doing.

First, I normally have to wait 50 minutes just to talk to someone. Second, they always seem to want to find the cheapest repair (even if it means paying more over the long run). I am a land lord, and using this warranty company takes forever even for a simple fix. So far my experiences with this company have been more bad than good.

At this point if i could give a zero rating i would. I have done business with ahs for close to 10 years and always had good and prompt service. This time however here is the time line: - called for ac service 2 + weeks ago, did not get scheduled with a provider for 5 days - calling to get an update takes > 1 hour each call, nothing is resolved - after about a week, a representative finally assigned a provider but the provider was from another state and did not answer his business phone when called nor answered his email or voicemail - ahs said if no one answers we could choose our own provider and they'll pay - when theassigned provider finally did answer, he could not come for another 3...
