Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

A nightmare for a simple clothes washer repair. First, apparently AHS went from a privately owned company to a public company recently, and as a result, changed a lot of their policies - all for the worse. One of those policies is the homeowner being able to choose the contractor. AHS had previously sent out great appliance repair company (company A). to do timely and efficient work previously. This time they sent out an unknown (company B) appliance repair company, even though I called before I confirmed the appointment and requested company A. But AHS said "no." Well...the so-called company B appliance service technical shows-up 2 days later in his beat up econo-car! The... Read More

I have participated in this program for many years now, and have been very satisfied with all aspects of the service. response times, quality of vendors, customer service all are outstanding. The pricing of the service is the only thing I would point out, as being a tad pricey per month.

When we moved into our new home we expected we would need to fix a few things since the appliances were nearly 8 years old, but we didn't expect our garbage disposal to go out the 3rd week in our home! But with a quick and easy online request, we had someone out the next day for a replacement! Not only was our technician SUPER nice and polite, but very quick! Thank you for hiring friendly workers and being so fast in our repair!! 😁🙏🏽

I really enjoy my American Homeshield, but it seems when you use it. The cost goes up even if you use it only 4 time out of the 6 years you had it. I don't like the issue of you exchanging a a product and the new product you replace it with end up cost more money. For example, you replace my dishwasher and every time we have a storm it has to be reset by a professional which cost me a deductible with my old dishwasher never had these problems.

I have just purchased a new home and, along with it, a warranty through American Home Shield. I've been on the telephone for HOURS waiting to speak with a live person as water has dripped through the ceiling of my hallway in several places, ruining the paint and drywall, and potentially carrying mold and bacteria. The service request I completed online resulted in a contractor determining that they could not repair the problem immediately as AHS requires a contractor to submit a bid, which must be APPROVED, prior to the completion of any work on the home. Therefore, it would take at least an additional day or two of water leaking into my hallway in order to use our policy as AHS gathered... Read More

This is my 2nd home warranty company. I had them for a year and only had to file two claims. 1st was due to a pipe that was leaking in my walls. Noticed it on a Saturday and I called it in and tried to get emergency work order but to no avail. Wasn't able to get a contractor out until that Tuesday to stop the leak. So the fact that I couldn't get service over the weekend was somewhat alarming however I ran into similar issues with my previous warranty company so I chalked it as a loss. Contractor they sent did provide good service and stopped the leak. Had to cut into my drywall, so AHS sent out a different contractor a few days later to repair the drywall at no additional service charge... Read More

We needed to have a new AC Unit installed. It took a little back and forth to get the job to a contractor, but it was in the middle of the summer and I understand all AC people are busy then. Our unit was original to the house (35+ years) and initially the contractor came and recharged the unit (so we would at least have some improvement) and then let us know it needed replacing. He got in touch with AHS and arranged everything - from permits to arranging the crane to get it up to the roof and the company to come out and do the duct testing when it was done. Our warranty covered a good portion (about 2/3) of the total cost. Contractor was excellent.

I have been without A/C (which is covered by my plan) for seven days now in 93 degree heat each day. The hold time is more than one-hour to talk to someone to find out they closed/completed my order when in fact I paid by service call fee and they never did the work. When I explained to the woman on the phone I work out of my office (I own a social media marketing agency) she said, "Oh, I understand, I do a little bit of that on the side." Are you kidding - this is my full-time job to pay my bills? Then when she told me she had no order to look, she then told me, "Have a wonderful day." Are you also kidding - I still have no A/C, paid for a service call, and she couldn't have cared less... Read More
