Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Been trying to get an electrical issuse fixed since FEB 2017, here it is AUG 2017. Waited for the Service Company to call me , they never did so called them and guess what, they no longer do business with AHS...So I called AHS and guess what, was told the system was down and need to call back to get someone with a working system because it was just the persons system I was connected to. So I called back and was told over 30 minute wait time. When to website and NO chat and NO email listed to contact...sometimes it is listed and other times it is not...I have emailed them several times past few months. NO response. I have other issuse and usually AHS is very fast in response, this time not... Read More

Update (I have several other post dating back to June 9) - I finally got my ac repaired. YAY. It took me several days and lots of prayer about this update. I genuinely haggled over what rating to give AHS. Although I have improved my rating I had to be honest about my feelings and upgrade them to a average rating. Had I been rating the AHS rep (Mr. Benson) that finally helped me after two years of this battle...it would be an 5 star rating. If it were the company (Family Mechanical) that eventually repaired my ac it would be a 5 star. Both treated me with respect, were very responsive, appeared to be honest and forthright about what was going, and eventually got our air conditioner... Read More

I have had AHS home warranty for 14 years. I am into their insurance for a lot of money or I would have dropped them. They changed their coverage from my initial policy ,yet continue to raise their rates. (as an example , AHS was paying for any freon for my A/C now they only pay the first pound and I have to pay for any additional amount above that first pound). I have called them almost yearly to replace my freon yet none of the technicians they send find and repair the leak. I did find out this year that unless you call for the exact same issue 3 times within a specified timeframe they do not do a thorough/extensive exam to find the leak. AHS television advertising is false,... Read More

I had AHS for years and used them very sparingly. So recently I scheduled a service all on their website. I had the problem fixed and attempted to cancel the call on the site but they don't have an option for that. So I contacted the contractor and canceled through them. They notified AHS and they still deducted the $75 service fee from my account. I contacted them and they told me they didn't see where they my account had been debited. I told them my account shows they took the money and their website shows they took the money. After about 10 minutes of they lady on the phone trying to play word games with me I canceled the contract. I've had AHS for more than 5 years and they... Read More

Horrible company! They sent out a plumber who installed my sink wrong and my toilet was still leaking. Then they wanted to try and tell me that on top of the 75.00 I had to spend on the service fee I owed them 30.00 more because the plumbers fees were over what they pay for. Then they refused to pay to fix our air conditioner. Save yourself time and a headache and cash out your policy now!!

Contractors are not well qualified. When replacement is needed it took 6 months to get a replacement & then would not repair or replace non working replacement unit. Also sent email that contractor fee had been paid & then 2 months later try to collect fee. Terrible customer service. Do not recommend.

The person AHS sent to fix my central air did a good job. My only complaint is that they only have one person in my area and it takes days for them to get to you.

Our experience with American Home Shield could not have been worse. I wish we had never signed up. Within 8 months of moving into our new home, we began to notice a small pooling of water in our basement, next to the indoor AC/furnace ductwork. We called American Home Shield to send someone our, per our service agreement. After calling numerous times, and being put on hold numerous times, finally they sent a company. The technician from this company was incredibly rude. I told them that I had done quite a bit of research before calling, and had ensured that it was not a clogged drain or tube from the unit. However, they simply "cleared the tube" then left. After the problem... Read More
