Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Phones calls at AHS are answered in a good timely matter however having to wait in 118 degree weather for an air-conditioner to be replaced because the technicians are waiting on approvals is not specially, an emergency work order doesn't guarantee it will be fixed in 24hrs that's for sure.

This company is horrible! Everytime I call it's a 1 hour or longer hold time. My a.c. broke on 7/31. I had an appt 8/3 (the soonest they could come out) and I live in florida !! It was a light drizzle rain and the tech would not even get out of his van .said it was raining to hard!! Rescheduled for 8/6!! Was NOT suppose to send the same tech out (and I was assured this would NOT happen) but who do you think they sent? Yep the very same tech. Not only did I have to let him in I had to put up with his excuses. I am DONE WITH THIS COMPANY!! They only want your money.

I am confused how AHS can be rated #1. This is definitely not accurate. I have had them for five going on six years. My experience with AHS is to NOT waste your money. The companies they refer are hardly ever reliable or professional. For your troubles they will NOT refund you.If you have a bad experience you just have a bad experience. Most things are NEVER covered you still come out of your pocket $500-900 for major repairs. Calling customer service is a joke you stay on hold 15-30 mins at a time for them to NEVER have any information on pending repairs or recall repairs that were done incorrectly the first time.My advice is to save your money.DO NOT I repeat DO NOT buy a home warranty... I have had home shield for a few years. My house has need work on the air conditioner, water heater and refrigerator. I have friends who have been working for weeks to get their claim address from another home warranty company. AHS has addressed my claims immediately, having someone on site in days. All the repairs have been completed quickly and fully to my satisfaction including replacing my refrigerator. I have never had one issue in dealing with AHS.

I had to go 1 week and 2 days without air conditioning. The 1st time it was 122 degrees outside. The second time it was 99 degrees inside and my water frogs died. It took 1 company coming 3 times, another company did not call or come at all and I had to wait for a no response in the sweltering heat before American Home Shield would dispatch a new company, and then another company came once thought they fixed it but did not. Then I had to wait to find out that company could not come again the second time their truck broke down. The warranty company did not think it was an emergency and made me wait till the next day for the 4th company to come out that fixed it. I got charged $75 for each... Read More
