Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I have 3 policies with AHS and I am going to cancel them all. To call in on the Customer Service line is a joke. You will be on hold for a minimum of 45 minutes, and that is a good day if they don't hang up on you and then you have to do it all over again. Sorry, I can't use the website because my phone and tablet are old and I can't download the newest version of Chrome. Excuse me for being poor. However, I now think it would be worth it to buy a new computer just so that I don't have to talk to AHS. They are completely inept and cannot do anything except put in a service order for you. They keep fixing broken parts and will NEVER replace anything. Something basically... Read More

Unless this warranty comes with the purchase of your home, paid by the seller, do not even waste your time and money. We have been working with our warranty since April of this year (4 months now and the entire Texas summer) to have our AC fixed. They keep sending the same vendor for has yet to fix our faulty AC. We have had to pay the $75 service twice because this request has been going to long. The vendor has drug it out 4 months to now conveniently 1 month before our warranty expires. Now, our compressor has gone out (something the vendor repeatedly said "might be the problem" but never fixed. They cannot get out to fix it for 7-10 days but conveniently, if we purchase a new unit... Read More

30 days my fridge was down all what it needed was freon. Each time we call to follow up 1 hour waiting time, and rep appears that is not properly informed , trained ... The companies they sent to do repair are in there to upsell in an obnoxious super greedy. For example 1st guy wrote a report that we could not see. It was a secret but eluded that is going to he super expensive. Second company send a tech his diagnosis were you need freon but my boss will decide. Then the boss decided that we need few thousands to fix the fridge!! Of course a new builtin fridge would cost over $10k. The 3rd compay 2 trips in spam of 10 days added freon and fridge worked like a champ. It was a nightmare

Had to pay multiple times to get a different person to fix our refrigerator because the first person (who I asked them not to send to us before they assigned him) harassed my wife and didn't fix the problem. We also had to pay twice for a leak because there were two leaks, and when one of them was at the base of the faucet, they told us that it would not be covered because it was too expensive. A complete waste of money and time. If you need a home warranty, just rely on yourself, you will save your monthly premiums and you will have to do that anyway if you get AHS.

The company you sent to our home were without qustion the worse. After 3 attempts to fix our water heater thet declared themselves done We woke up later that night with a strong odor of gas in the house and the company has no after hour contact number. When they still did not return my repeated calls the next day by 11am, I finally got through Terrible reprehensible customer service. They should be out of business.

The contractors will ALWAYS charge you for stuff you don't need and that runs your out of pocket expense way up every time. You can not get through to speak with someone about a claim without waiting on hold a minimum of 30 minutes most times you're on hold close to an hour. I know that sounds like an exaggeration, but I swear it's not. AHS is a SCAM. STAY AWAY PLEASE.

What a rip off. I have called this company a total of 4 times for an air condition problem. The problem has never been fixed. We are renting the property and our renters are fed up, as they should be. Each time we call you, it takes 24-hours to be contacted and another 48 hours to be serviced. We have 2 contracts with you and they are about to be pulled. You should be ashamed to call yourselves a company who serves their customers.
