Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

AMS uses Freedom Heating & Cooling for their HVAC repairs. AMS should check this company before using them as there are many complaints against this company. I was out $75.00 for absolutely no service. AMS would not allow themselves to be responsible. Only the consumer is responsible for AMS errors/mistakes.

My contract number is #212324322 I consider myself a very fair person. Or maybe I have high expectations but my experience is always the following. 1. Hold times to talk to a representative are always near or more than 30 minutes. 2. They rely on local contracts. I have yet to have a service be fixed in less than 3 visits. Anything breaks needs parts and they need to first look, then buy parts with approval of AHS and then ordered, then they come back at least once, sometimes several times. 3. Speed because of this process is not fast. You will be without that product for at least 10 days. 4. At 400/year, its better to just put that into a fund and save. You would have 4K... Read More

Two months ago I received a prompt and efficient service call regarding my malfunctioning didhwasher .The problem was in the computer panel which required the ordeing of a new panel. The wait was at least a week, but I received a call from the technican informing me of the shipment progress. He was back with the part at the appointed time and the repair was done quickly!. I appreciate the politeness and promptness of the techinican. The fact that only one serviice call payment was required is also appreciated! This was my second time to receive excellent service from Home Shield, the first being an air conditioning problem that required a complete new system in my former... Read More

For the most part, AHS is quick to respond to claims and service callls are handled in a timely manner. However, if an issue isn't resolved with a visit, then I have to call AHS back in order for a service person to return to fix the issue. The membership costs have risen about 20-25% in five years.

On July 1st, I called in that my A/C was broken. I did not get get any response. On July 5, I had to call the assigned company to get any appointment. On July 7 at 4:30 pm a tech came by to diagnose the issue. It took several phone calls to American Home SHield and Total AIr Care to get this fixed. At least 3 different times, I requested phone calls from supervisors of both companies to help me. Not one call back. Finally, on July 21, 20 days after I called to report he issue, It was fixed. I live in Florida. The average outdoor temperature was 95 degrees and the interior temperature was 87 degrees. Needless to say this was an extremely uncomfortable and frustrating situation. All this... Read More

I call you on 08/08/17 and I was placed on hold for 40 minutes. I decided to hung up and call later. I called aging and I was placed on hold for another 30 minutes. I just want to ask about my home warranty cover because the explanation on the web PDF is not clear to me. I decided to contact a business directly to repair my garage door. I am very disappointed. More than an hour on the phone and nobody was able to answer.
