Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I am not going to bore anyone with any fluff Im just going to give you the facts!! 1) My garbage disposal went out and I called AHS to come and fix, I paid my $75.00 fee and the guy came out....but when he got there he said he needed to replace a pipe by law on the garbage disposal and that he would have to charge me $65.00 to do so. At that price ($135.00) I could have bought the disposal myself and changed it. So the AHS warranty was no help there, nor did anyone tell me when i scheduled the repair that it would cost me an extra $65.00!!!! 2) My refrigerator goes out and is not cooling, Keep in mind that I live in Florida with my wife and 3 kids now. I called AHS and they told... Read More

We have had AHS for our rental property for several years. Recently we made the decision to add our home for the services. I would not recommend this program to anyone. The wait time is horrific. I would have never imagine having to sit on a phone for up to 30 minutes to speak to a representative (not once, twice, but more than 3 times), I actually warmed my lunch to return to still being on hold.. Due to a very poor referral, I was inquiring about other options for our situation and basically was told there were none. Well, I expressed and made it clear that I would be cancelling both policies. We have truly been hoodwinked and I thank God for other competitors out there. Gracious knows,... Read More

The rep who took the claim over the phone was great, and the tech that came from the company contracted to fix our A/C was GREAT. He answered any questions without hesitation, was very professional & he was able to replace the broken part all in one visit, we were thrilled! Not one complaint.

Very poor access to any customer service. Long wait times on the phone. No access to emergency service as AHS provides one vendor only. The vendor has 24 hours to respond with an appointment- not helpful at all if you have a leak as I did damaging your home. Most customer service reps are poorly trained and not helpful. I called the vendor immediately and thankfully they were very professional and provided excellent support and service. Not so with AHS.

They need to do a better job checking out the companies they use for repairs. They sent a company, Mid State Refrig to repair my air conditioner. Tech was here for 3 hrs, left me with 90 degrees in my house. Told me fan, motor coils needed to be replaced. He went back to office, and they said no it needed a air handler, lady in office told me the guy they sent was new and did not know what he was doing. Came back out after not having air for almost 3 days, service mgr came with him, then I was told reason it was not working because the guy wired the fan backwards!!!! Then he said this is a busy time of year for them so they hire extra help, I told him he should check on who they hire.... Read More

We have had this company for 4 years and used them 6 times over the 4 years. I would run from this particular agency and fast. You sit on hold at times for 1hr and 45 minutes at times and are many times placed on hold for another 30 minutes because the individual cannot handle the problem. The most recent (lack of a repair) was our a/c unit in the attic. They sent a company to our home and the tech stated " we had missing bolts and wires". The second opinion stated we needed a blower motor and another component. If wires and bolts were missing we would not have been able to use our a/c at the hottest time of the year in Texas. Considering we have a total of 4 a/c units in our... Read More

Airtronics did a horrible job repairing our A/C. We were out of a/c for a month & a half. They sent a tech who didn't know what he was doing apparently - he "fixed" it then that night the breaker tripped & we were out of a/c again. Then they sent another tech who wasted 3 trips not fixing the issue (with lonnng time gaps in between his visits). I was told by AHS I was "entitled to a 2nd opinion" which I thought meant free - I got the 2nd opinion but I suspect I will be billed for it - if so I will protest that b/c the rep at AHS I spoke with just said "you are entitled to get a 2nd opinion" & did not say - "for the $100 service fee" which is false & misleading. AHS even had to send... Read More
