Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

If you are having a product that's fixed under warranty that is a seasonal item such as your AC it's better to wait if something breaks at the end of the season because if the repair company doesn't get it fixed properly and you find the error the next spring you are out another deductible for the same issue. The customer service is poor at best and when you combine it with long wait times to speak to someone for an issue you can't resolve on their website it's just overall a sour experience.

No stars. Takes forever to speak to someone when you try to call customer service. Poor communication between AHS and contractors about service that is actually needed. Was inconvenienced by service techs sent that could not provide service because he wasn't trained in the type of system which they knew when tech was sent to home requiring more loss of time from work for customer because an add'l appt had to be made. Made a customer service complaint that was never followed up on.

I have contacted AHS twice. The first time was for the icemaker in my refrigerator. The response was immediate and the experience was very positive. The vendor was on time, communicated well and the problem was fixed. The second time was for my air conditioner. I gave the vendor a chance to contact me and when that didn't happen I contacted the vendor directly. I had to leave a message on a machine and no one ever returned my call. I tried another vendor and they came and fixed the problem the next morning. I am disappointed that the vendor fro AHS never called and that I was out of pocket over $300 for the repair. Trying to call AHS is a nightmare, the hold time was too long and their... Read More

I called AHS because of some water in my ductwork, the tech came out late in the day, vacuumed out the water and told me to call him if I saw any water in there again and he would do a more permanent repair. The tech also wore his dirty boots on my recently cleaned carpet and he also "vaped" while in my driveway and on my deck... very unprofessional!! I called the tech the next day after noticing water in the ductwork again, he said he wasn't in the area that day and I told him I would be home the remainder of the week, he said he would call before stopping by later in the week. He never called me back. I called AHS again a few weeks later, the AHS Rep scheduled another appointment with... Read More

Issue was my AC unit was not cooling. Spent over 3 hours on wait over the course of two days, the first representative I worked with were not helpful, or knowledgeable enough to assist me with my claim, which lead to having call again. The secound was much of the same, finally the third managed to find a technician that could help. My family suffered thru high 90 weather, and AHS would not expedite because unless it's =>105 degrees they won't offer next or same day service. Not only that, you pay for coverage and the actual amount they cover is minimal. I would not recommend this company to anyone.

I have had AHS for 10 years now and we love knowing we do not need to worry about an expensive repair. We use our warranty at least twice a year and that covers the cost of the warranty and saves us thousands of dollars on the repairs. Three years ago our heat pump went out and all it cost us for a new one was $75 service fee and the cost of the Freon. I always ask the repairmen what it would have cost me if I was paying and I am so glad we have the AHS warranty when they give me the answer. Mike P Kentucky
