Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

This company is a real rip off! I really wish people look at the reviews that this company has in Google and Facebook and then plan! Long story short, its going to be a small claims court with these fraudsters. They are absolute liars in their terms and they would send in contractors who will manipulate the issue in such a way that we end up paying more than its required as out of pocket. Funny thing is that they don't know that we are smart too!

I have not had good experience with AHS overall. It is easy to tell them what needs repair by going to their website but the contractors affiliated with AHS are hard to find. We live in Columbia and the plumbing company that served our house were located 60 miles away and they were able to fix the problem only after 5 or 6 visits. Same thing happened with Air conditioning problem we had; this time it took them 5 visits and problem was still not fixed. AHS declined to authorize a new A.C. unit and wanted to order parts for the very old unit. When the agent came to fix the unit, he did not have all the parts as AHS forgot to order all the parts. Frustrated beyond words, we decided to pay out... Read More

They are higher priced and took longer to repair. Wanted me to wait 2 weeks for someone to come out and look at refrigerator/ freezer that where not working. When finally got somebody, took a while to get new one. But they would NOT give me the same brand I had. I complained to no avail. I was stuck with refrigerator that didn't have the textured (no prints) surface. Was too high for me to reach the water filter or the ice cube maker....not to mention that it only made like 6 cubes at a time.!!!

After move in we found 2 separate issues. One was plumbing one was electrical. AHS responded quickly to our request for service. The individuals who came were prompt and professional. No additional charges were needed. No huge repairs were suggested. We were back in order quickly.

We have been customers for approximately 18 yrs. Normally there isn't a big issue on repairs BUT when it comes to a major repair we have been through hell with AHS. Our AC unit has been giving us problems for a few years. We have paid for freon multiple times to be replaced, along with the compressor. Trouble started again in April 2017 and after 5 different contractors( 2 of which were sub contractors) putting in their diagnoses we finally have a new AC unit installed correctly at the end of July 2017. The biggest issue I believe was about the money that needed to be spent. We were told we could take a buy out and replace it- I wanted it CORRECTLY fixed or REPLACED. I told AHS after 18... Read More

Can I put a negative star? Requested service for my A/C unit. First contractor never called. Called AHS, on hold for >1hr. Got contractor switched. Took a month for 2nd contractor to come out. When 2nd contractor came out, he just did a visual inspection, no dye or pressure test determine if there was an actual leak in the condenser coil. Said that the outdoor unit needs to be replaced. Had to call AHS to find out the status of the repair each time >1hr on hold. The contractor had not submitted the paperwork. When I finally got an answer about the repair, AHS and the contractor said that they would not replace the whole system. I had 2 independent contractors give me quotes on... Read More

I have had to deal with customer service almost on a daily basis for over 3 months.... The appliance that needed repair required 3 of AHS contracted service "professional" to fix. Absolutely a horrible experience!!!

Their prices are much higher then others. Wait times are very long. Speak to someone who doesn't know English well. I just cancelled after 3 years of dealing with them!
