Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I have had a positive experience with all service I have ever received from AHS -- I've been with them since 2004 to the present! I've had an entire A/C system replaced and after that, repairs to it; repairs to washer, dryer, and refrigerator. I've had 2 hot water tanks replaced. Everything has been top-notch, efficient and competent. Their policy rates are competitive. I'm a very satisfied customer!

I have used AHS previously without a problem. The last visit left me with a bad taste in my mouth. The technician did not seem interested and it took several weeks and several phone calls before my freezer was fixed. I can't believe that customer service followed up to ensure the repair was completed or contact me to advise of the status. I had to wait over 45 minutes to speak with an agent. I finally was able to connect via the webpage.

My experience was absolutely terrible. I had a heat pump go out at the end of my contract. The contractor that has hired, Greendian LLC, was beyond terrible. From the first day they came to inspect the issue until it was finally remediated was approximately 6 weeks. I requested to use a different contractor because Greendian was so terrible and AHS would do absolutely nothing to help me. Their customer service reps hung up on me multiple times and when I finally spoke to a manager, he lied and told me they had connection issues which caused the call to be dropped. I would never ever recommend anyone to use this company or their subcontractor.

The services are good and response from contractors is very satisfactory-HOWEVER- it' impossible to reach AHS by phone unless you have 20 minutes to sit. I called yesterday with a question, was told I had a 10 minute wait, heard a click and was told my wait was another 10 to 15 minutes. Didn't want to spend 25 min. to ask a simple question.

Very disappointed! Contacted AHS for two different issues one clogged drain the other my AC not cooling. AHS had companies come out both of which were unprofessional and incompetent. Neither the sink nor my AC issues were resolved. The plumber poured bleach down my sink and said I was good to go. The AC technician checked my system and told me it was fine and my expectation of my AC cooling to 71 at night were unrealistic. I contacted both companies to have them come out and make things right only to have the plumber tell me to pour bleach down my AC line and the AC technician not show up two times without a phone call. When AC came back out they didn't have the additive they were... Read More

So I just submitted a review wherein I explained the difficulty I have contacting AHS. At the same time time, I was waiting on hold to spek with someone. I waited 49 minutes after which time my call was disconnected. Very frustrating. Now I called again and was informed my "expected wait time is greater than 30 minutes".

I have had AHS for a long time and anytime I have needed service they have been quick to respond. I have called and placed a repair order and have also placed an order at the web site, both ways have been effective. The companies have been quick to respond and have usually been companies I am familiar with.
