Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I own a condominium on the Gulf Shore of Alabama, and have an American Home Shield Warranty for that property. In July, the air conditioning stopped working--not a good thing in Southern Alabama during the summer. It was close to July 4th, so we ran into holiday scheduling issues, but the company that came assessed the problem and identified the problem as a broken part in the condenser system Further investigation determined that the part was specific to the system and could have a generic substitution. Once the part was located, American Home Shield paid for the part and my AC was working within a couple of days. Sadly, because of the time of year and the proprietary nature of the part,... Worst company ever. I'm actually going to cancel today. I have had AC companies out 8 times in the last two years & no one can get the AC to work properly. When I call customer service, they do absolutely nothing to help. Each company has to drain freon & then put more in, at "50$" a pound. What a freaking scam.

Its very good and reassuring. Usually very quick service on all calls. It's worth the money for sure, even though you may go a while before needing them. The only couple of things I don't like and wished they'd change: 1. Outside plumbing leaks; from the meter to your home aren't ever covered. and 2. Payment for cash-out on non-repairable appliances is slow.

Poor choice here. 545 for warranty. 75 for service call. NOTHING called about is covered. Never received coverage details, like a booklet, specific list etc. . Paid out of pocket for locksmith to rekey at 129 and found later that was covered. NO reimbursement. "He's not in our network". Garage door off track...nope. Hot water heater, new, not installed right...nope. (STILL living with cold water only for a month now. 75 service call to be told NOT covered). Broken window...nope. Still have issues in this home, but am quite sure they'll do NOTHING and at 75 a pop, NOT ABLE ON SS! At this time, I can honestly say the purchase of a warranty, with this company was a mistake. The money spent so... Read More

Do not use these people! I have called 3 times. Each time their is an hour hold time to wait to talk to a rep. Also I had them fix a hot water heater they sent a contractor out to my house after talking to him. He had just got out of prison for rape. They hire the lowest life people to come to your house that do shady work. Beware.

Work is always done, but in many cases the process is drawn out by an outdated parts supply chain. Often the repair company may have the parts in hand, but AHS forces them to wait until they (AHS) orders parts through their own supply network (in order to save on costs). This delays what could be a quick repair. Also the consumer has no choice in repair company being sent out. If you have a bad experience and need another repair, you get the same poor performer

AHS is definitely an advocate for the vendor and not the customer. I have been in several situations where I received bad diagnostics in which the vendor was allowed to overcharge me for services that were not needed or performed services to avoid the real issue which allowed them to come back multiple times to handle. I am actually checking out other warranty company's because I am going to cancel both of my contracts with AHS because of the timeliness of completing jobs and again their willingness to work with vendors who take advantage of their customers. Even the service fee is astronomical when most vendors in today's time will come out to check the issue out and diagnose for free.

The customer service was horrible. I asked the young to explain something about the contract & she stated that I needed to read it again...It's obvious if I'm asking a question I don't understand & you would think that's what you guys are for. She was very rude.
