Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

American Home Shield coverage has been on my home since 2001. My home was built in 1989 and I've replaced many items that were older before they needed to be repaired or replaced. There are some items that are original, even some newer appliances that had issues. Every call and request for service from American Home Shield has resulted in positive results. Some of the contractors were not the best, but AHS did their part in answering the call, and placing the order for service and paying for the repairs or for another contractor to come out. On items the service company/repairman could not locate parts for, American Home shield gave me money towards replacement of a similar... Read More

I attempted to use the plan for three issues. Of the three only one was corrected. The first was our refrigerator randomly freezing the contents regardless of the settings. The first repair people failed to show up three times. The next repair company showed up and said I just liked my beverages too cool. (Fridge temp. thermostat setting ranges from 47 to 33 degrees. I had it set to 36 degrees. The second issue called in was a bad condenser fan motor on the upstairs heatpump. That was replaced and corrected the issue. This June I called in that my upstairs unit would not cool. I called in on June 9,2017. The came out and had to order a part. My contract ended June 23rd. The part did not... Read More

AHS in the beginning was very good. They sent repairmen who were from the area, and they did the work and everything went as it should have. I paid the monthly fee and the trip fee (75.00) and the rest they covered. The last 2 times I have had to get work done on my A/C units, they have tried to pull this "upgrade" scam. They have sent a team from Atlanta to repair it. They come, say they have to wait for AHS to approve and then they will return. Instead, they have AHS call you later and say that the system needs all these parts and won't cover them as they are not up to code. They want you to go outside them and get it fixed then turn it in and get ripped off more. A repairman who... Read More

We have had AHS for several years now and for the most part have had good service all the way around/except in contacting customer service. We have had one bad contractor and AHS sent another out at our request. The most problems I have is in contacting AHS customer service personnel, it takes an extraordinary amount of time to contact a real person. Most occasions you are on hold for an hour or more and then sometimes they refer you to someone else and the wait begins again. Customer service needs improvement, the on hold periods are terrible....

I was matched with a service provider the same day I made the claim and had the repairs completed within 24 hours. AHS even did a follow up to ensure I was satisfied.

I own a condominium on the Gulf Shore of Alabama, and have an American Home Shield Warranty for that property. In July, the air conditioning stopped working--not a good thing in Southern Alabama during the summer. It was close to July 4th, so we ran into holiday scheduling issues, but the company that came assessed the problem and identified the problem as a broken part in the condenser system Further investigation determined that the part was specific to the system and could have a generic substitution. Once the part was located, American Home Shield paid for the part and my AC was working within a couple of days. Sadly, because of the time of year and the proprietary nature of the part,... Worst company ever. I'm actually going to cancel today. I have had AC companies out 8 times in the last two years & no one can get the AC to work properly. When I call customer service, they do absolutely nothing to help. Each company has to drain freon & then put more in, at "50$" a pound. What a freaking scam.

Its very good and reassuring. Usually very quick service on all calls. It's worth the money for sure, even though you may go a while before needing them. The only couple of things I don't like and wished they'd change: 1. Outside plumbing leaks; from the meter to your home aren't ever covered. and 2. Payment for cash-out on non-repairable appliances is slow.

Poor choice here. 545 for warranty. 75 for service call. NOTHING called about is covered. Never received coverage details, like a booklet, specific list etc. . Paid out of pocket for locksmith to rekey at 129 and found later that was covered. NO reimbursement. "He's not in our network". Garage door off track...nope. Hot water heater, new, not installed right...nope. (STILL living with cold water only for a month now. 75 service call to be told NOT covered). Broken window...nope. Still have issues in this home, but am quite sure they'll do NOTHING and at 75 a pop, NOT ABLE ON SS! At this time, I can honestly say the purchase of a warranty, with this company was a mistake. The money spent so... Read More
