American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Positively the worst experience I've had working with American Home Shield warranty. My telephone on hold times averaged at least an hour each time to attempt getting approval for our covered sewage ejector pump.The plumber assigned to the job complained to me he had 12 other calls to cover that day but left telling me it wasn't a covered in our contract. (while I showed him the contract while he was on a call to AHS) It took 10 days to get this straightened out and during those 10 days, it was a long drawn out process to talk to staff and/or supervisors to try and get answers and resolution. Horrible service consistently find ways to say things are conveniently not covered by even their best of the best warranty plan. Kept having to request second opinions just to have what I paid for each month honored. I just canceled my warranty plan because I am done going through all of their red tape. All the while my item (hot water heater, A/C, garbage disposal, oven, etc. sits and is still out of service while dealing with their nonsense.

A very disorganized company. When something goes wrong in your home , good luck reaching them in a timely manner. It took almost 3 weeks to fix my hot water heater. Hot water is kind of. Necessity. Very disappointed. The company wants to make it as difficult as possible for u to get service so u just give up.

I had a problem with my Sub-Zero refrigerator. Home Shield had very few repairmen on Long Island to fix this appliance. The first one they sent was from Staten Island and he never fixed the problem and then took my $125 without recording that I had paid him. The second repairmen only spoke Russian and he thought there was no problem with the refrigerator. The third repair person from Action Repair Service knew what he was doing and finally fixed the refrigerator. I don't hold American Home Shield responsible for this mess but they could have better repairmen on Long Island if they want to do business here. I have used them before and they are essentially a sound, reputable company.

Responsive service for the two issues I have had thus far. One issue -- a broken garbage disposal -- was replaced within a couple of days. The second issue -- a problem with our stove/oven -- was initially serviced within a few days. The final servicing will be completed Aug. 21 -- about 12 days after I submitted the ticket.

My review of one star is based on the need for American home sheild to hold their vendors to a higher standard regarding timeliness and quality of work for members. I have had several vendors with horrible customer service and lack of experience in their field . I have waited 3 weeks for a response on my HVAC system replacement in the hot month of August and in December of this year waited a month for a completion of my hot water heater replacement . There is a need for process improvement within the company regarding the relationship with the vendors and how the operate with the members of American home shield .

I have been without a dryer for over a month now and waited on hold yesterday for 20 minutes then the call was disconnected. Only for me to call back and wait on hold for over an hour. The CS I spoke with was very nice and seemed to be as helpful as possible but there still is no resolution and I haven't received a call/email from the applicance company or American Home Shield.

This is by far the WORST home warranty company I've ever used. I was without a fridge for 3 weeks. Parts were ordered and arrived on time but the repair company kept delaying. I didn't have working AC for over a week in Texas, in the hottest time of the year. There have been multiple screw ups including using unqualified, poorly trained employees/contractors, inability to follow your own policies, no regard for requests as to which number to call (despite it being requested multiple times), poor work, and the inability to ever make contact with management. I have spent over 8 hours on the phone trying to get my repairs completed in the last week alone. Hold times are insane. I'm amazed... Read More
