Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Overall I know things happen where AHS could not be efficient toward my needs, but the temperature was in the triple digits and I suffered from the time I called on 07/31/17 until 08/18/17, that was too long for anyone to have to wait for service, communication was awful, be more communicative please, calling in was a nightmare, I will give them a chance to rectify the problems.

I've had to call AHS twice in 2 years, both times for my water heater and the plumbers they have sent out have been very professional. This most recent experience was especially encouraging as I'd had a contractor friend look at my water heater and have me consider purchasing a new one for over $1500. The plumber AHS sent out - Woods Plumbing from Fayetteville, NC - not only told me I didn't need a new water heater but informed me that when I do, it will cost between $300-800 and will be covered by my warranty with AHS - Whew! Thank you, American Home Shield Home Warranty. you are worth every penny!

American Home Shield is responsive and has great customer service. Their digital application on the phone is convenient and it's the only thing I use. In 1 minute I can get an appointment for my service needs. AHS also follows up to ensure service was rendered the way you require it. I would recommend AHS to everyone I know.

I like that you all send someone out to resolve the problem quickly. But i have been having problems with my AC unit for about 6 years, 2 or 3 times every summer. And you all hasn't replaced it. The companies you all are sending out here is doing temporary fixes. I think the unit needs too be replaced.

The first company assigned to fix out AC was going to take 4 days. When u called AHS back to try to get another company assigned I sat in the phone queue for 50 minutes!!! RIDICULOUS!!! It was quickly assigned to a different company and they did a great job very quickly. The AHS phone queue made this a horrible experience.

Buyer beware. They contract with the worst companies and when you need to speak with them it takes over an hour to get through.

I would like to score the full 5 stars but.... Some of the repair services do not reflect AHS standard. I had a significant problem with a poor service company when I looked at their BBB rating and over a 100 reviews, I couldn't understand how AHS could use such a poorly rated company and the complaints were so similar. I did appreciate AHS efforts to address the problem and I am hopeful that AHS will reevaluate how service company's are selected and monitored.

David, I completely understand your concern about a poorly rated company. AHS does review all of our companies and guarantee they are licensed and insured.

you need to get a second company to check out your system when they call for auto they will not get you the money you are owed they call parts that are not a part of your system I am working on a way for people to get that info and the companies that are calling things like r-8 wraps instead of the proper term so it would not be covered and making you pay out of pocket this has been going on for years a lot in the kingwood, texas area will try to get info on what can be done, but for now always ask for proper code terms and contact your local inspectors office.

I give American Home Shield a zero rating. It is August 19th and I have been without Air Conditioning since July 8th. Their contractor, Piedmont Mechanical in Georgia came out three times, which I had to time off from work, and they did not fix the problem. I'm still sweating in my house. I called AHS to complain and had to wait to talk to a representative an hour and fifteen minutes. My complaint was July 20th and they obliviously did not take my message seriously, I'm still sweating. Piedmont Mechanical only works from 8-4 Mon-Fri, not on Saturday. I pay a monthly payment to AHS and this is what I get, wow. Do not use this company. Maybe this will be fixed by winter.
