Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

This was amusing a week or so ago but I am Literally begging anyone one from AHS to PLEASE contact me. It has been a month since I made my first request to have my A/C fixed and it has become unbearable. I am reporting you to the Mississippi BBB and the MS State attorney general. I have been nice to an extent at first but this has become rediculous.

This warranty is a waste of money, and time! My air conditioner went out this summer, and I had to fix it myself.Waited on American home shield for a week just to hear them say it's not covered. I wish I had my money back that I've paid on the policy for the last two years! I will be canceling my policy this year. Do not waste your money with this company!

So far, I really have nothing good to say about the company. I spent 2 hours, mostly on hold, trying to get clarification of coverage due to an ambiguous statement in the contract. I spoke with several people who were more than willing to sell me coverage but had no idea what was in the contract. I made 2 appointments for 2 different items but cancelled the 1 when they said it was not covered. I was charged for the appt anyway. There is no quick and easy way to contact them - no email, no chat - only waiting on hold for hours. They have a terrible reputation in this regard. Even the realtors and companies that provide service will tell you the same thing.

American Home Shield is probably the worst company in the United States and their home warranty is a big scam. DO NOT pay money for it! My central A/C broke and their incompetent contractor took over 10 months, 6 visits and my personally paying over $2,000 in "uncovered fees" for them to band aid it back together. The system should have been replaced, but even though they claim they'll replace broken systems they won't really do it. I also asked repeatedly in over 25 phone calls to AHS for them to assign a different HVAC contractor, but they said the one I had was the only one available.

I would not recommend this company. Each time I had to contact them I was on hold for a minimum of 30 minutes (this is not an exaggeration). One time, I was on hold for over an hour and then was hung up on. Their customer service has the lowest level of satisfaction I have experienced with a professional organization. And it is not only the American Home Shield personnel, but the trade vendors they use. An air conditioning company told me they would not be able to come service my a/c unit for a week (I live in Florida!) I had to call AHS (and wait on hold 45 minutes) to complain and then they assigned my to another a/c vendor who was able to come out in three days. I had a clothes dryer go... Read More

The only issue I have with AHS is that it takes an extremely long time to get in touch with a live person on the telephone, but once you have made contact and made your concerns known, they are resolved in a timely manner. The service providers are friendly, respectful and they do a great job. If there is an issue with a repair that is not successful and the 90 day period has not passed, it will be resolved promptly and professionally. My rating is due to the extremely long wait time to speak with an live representative at AHS.

I have had American Home Shield in the past and they were always great, as well as the vendors. However, this last service request was a bit of a letdown, to say the least. I was on hold for over 30 minutes to speak with a representative. The representative was great (the vendor I requested was not an approved vendor-no big deal). The vendor they assigned was not local and getting a hold of them was a nightmare! They would not answer their phones and were not open over the weekend. I called AHS on Saturday to inquire why my status was "unable to contact". I was informed that it was now up to me to contact the vendor-hard to do when they don't answer their phones or work weekends! I... Read More

My experience with this company was horrible. As of today (20 days after a visit from their plumber) I finally had to hire my own, out-of-pocket, to fix the broken tub. It was our only bathroom and have been showering as a friends house for almost a MONTH. Try calling American Home Shield... and you'll wait 2+hours to speak with someone. I couldn't feel more negative about this company or my experience.
