Hippo Home Insurance Review
ConsumersAdvocate.org Rating: 8.7 / 10 (Excellent)
Hippo may be a fairly new home insurance company but they are underwritten by Topa, a California-based company with a 30+ year history and an A- rating with A.M. Best. Hippo has taken a modern approach to homeowners insurance and streamlined existing policies, stripping them of no longer relevant coverage and adding coverage for more contemporary needs. One example is providing four times the usual amount of coverage for your home office equipment, should you be working from home. Another major standout component is their coverage for certain home appliances and systems, such as washing machines and water heaters. These are items that typically do not fall under the umbrella of a homeowner's policy. Hippo also extends coverage to nannies, babysitters, and other individuals working in your house.
As of now Hippo only operates in California.
Hippo's application process is fast and entirely online. For most customers, it takes only minutes to get a quote. In order to proceed with the application, Hippo will require the following:
- Year Built
- Square Footage
- Roof Type
- Family Units
- Construction Type
In addition to all the standard form home insurance coverage Hippo offers, the company also has added some additional features and built them into their policies.
4X Coverage - Hippo offers four times the normal amount of coverage for office equipment like personal computers.
Appliance Coverage - Repairs the things that occasionally break, i.e. appliances, water & heating systems, TV's, etc.
Rebuilding Cost Protection - Labor costs can soar in an area after a catastrophe. This feature boosts your coverage in such an event.
Water Backup Protection
Service Line Protection
Ordinance or Law - Covers you if you need to fix your home after local ordinances have changed
Workers Comp - Coverage for nannies, babysitters, etc.
Cutting Edge Sensors
Replacement Cost - Rather than depreciated value
|Non-sufficient funds fee||$20|
Hippo accepts claims over the phone, or via chat, email, or tweet.
Home Insurance with Hippo
Hippo has put a lot of effort into modernizing homeowners insurance and addressing the blind spots in traditional policies. The coverage for home computer equipment, the adjustment for rebuilding costs in the event of a large scale disaster, and the replacement cost features all make their plans well worth a look if you live in the state of California.
