Assisted Living Options

Individuals require different levels of care depending on their situation. Independent living communities are designed for adults who are still able to care for themselves but don't want all the hassle that comes with owning and maintaining a home while assisted living facilities and nursing homes provide more support to adults who are unable to adequately care for themselves. Memory care services are ideal for older adults suffering from Alzheimer's Disease or dementia. Then, there are home healthcare services for adults who require assistance but don't want to leave their homes.

No one option is better than any other. It all depends on the individual's preferences and situation. We favored assisted living services that offered several of the above options so that each person could choose the right fit for them.

Service Area

We focused on companies that helped connect you with assisted living services across the country. Most offer information on assisted living in all 50 states and some have resources for Canadian residents as well. We preferred companies that offered information not only to residents of large cities but also to rural areas as well. Having a greater number of facilities to choose from is helpful because it gives people a better chance of finding a facility that fits their needs and budget.

Ease of Use

A good assisted living service should make it easy to locate the options in your area and compare their services and costs. We gave extra points to those that provide easy access to pricing information and incorporated customer reviews to give those interested in assisted living a broader view of the quality of service the assisted living facility provides.

Many assisted living services offer phone consultations to help you identify what's most important to you in an assisted living facility and which options might be right for you. This is a nice option for those who don't have the time or interest to research all the various assisted living facilities in their area and for seniors who may not be as comfortable navigating the internet.

Once you've narrowed down your choices, your assisted living service may also be able to assist you in setting up tours so you can get a feel for which place you like the best. Not everyone will be interested in these services, but they're undoubtedly useful for those who are too busy to do all the research on their own, so we rated companies that offer this type of assistance above those that do not.

Online Resources

Most assisted living services include online help articles to familiarize you with the challenges of finding an assisted living facility and provide you with information on how to choose the facility that's right for you. These resources aren't as important as the other factors discussed here because you can always find this information elsewhere on the internet. But it is nice when an assisted living service provides this information all in one place so you don't have to spend hours searching all over the internet to find it.
