Generali scored high with us because, as travel insurers go, they offer some of the most comprehensive coverages, highest payout maximums, and many additional policy features other providers don't.

All standard trip interruption and cancelation reasons are provided for, and then some. Additionally, the company has generous provisions for baggage and trip delays. Generali really shines when it comes to its traveler assistance services.

Along with all the usual customer assistance features, the company also makes provision for such things as specialty food delivery, an emergency cash advance of $500, and travel companion meet and greet services. Pound for pound, one of the most extensive offerings out there.

Generali Global Assistance Plans & Coverage

Coverage - 3.8 / 5

Generali offers some of the highest payout maximums in travel insurance coverage of the plans we evaluate.

The company will cover up to a whopping $250,000 max for medical care, and up to $1 million for emergency medical transportation. There are three plan levels that, aside from a few items, only differ in maximum payouts for certain coverages.

The Standard (cheapest) plan only differs in that it won't provide reimbursement for sporting equipment damage or delay, and only provides accidental death & dismemberment coverage if injured in an air flight accident.

Generali also stands out in the trip interruption/cancellation category. They will reimburse up to 175% the cost of the trip due to trip interruption, and also provide a generous $1,000 travel delay reimbursement. If you purchase the premium plan, the coverage kicks in after a mere 6-hour delay.

Generali, unique among travel insurers, also provides trip cancelation coverage in the event of sickness/death of a service animal. In addition to all the standard trip cancellation reasons, the company also includes coverage if you are unable to get a vaccination necessary for travel, and coverage if you have to cancel due to notification of a successful organ match.

Some additional coverages of note include optional rental care damage coverage, up to $10,000 to transport a companion to your bedside if you are under emergency medical care, and reimbursement for unauthorized use of credit cards.

I call, no response, I’m an administrator I’m good at putting together everything that is required. Terrible at responding, terrible at communicating. Don’t do it! I purchased coverage from Generali for a trip this past September 1,2022. The coverage was to cover the entire trip including air travel and cruise. Due to mechanical problems (which I have proved ) the flight turned around mid-flight. There was difficulty rebooking the flight which resulted in missing 2 days of the cruise. On top of that our luggage never arrived until we were home for a week. This necessitated the purchase of various items like toothpaste, toothbrushes, underwear, and some clothing. We have an existing policy for an upcoming trip, and I need to modify the policy. I thought CHAT would be easiest, it is posted on Generali's website as 24/7 -- nope, no response to my posted question after 30 minutes. So, I called the 800 number listed on our policy confirmation, which only cycles me into a "virtual agent" OK, the virtual agent sent me a link to another website to modify the policy. I changed the trip cost there, and within 30 minutes, received an email with the policy detail, showing the original trip cost, and nothing about any change. Not very happy right now with the inability to make a change to this policy, either with a live agent or through any other means.

I just purchased our second policy from Generali. Have read good things about company, and certainly the buying process was easy and the price awesome. It's impossible at this point to give a true rating, because so much depends on the 24 hour assistance line and any potential future claims. We certainly don't expect to need anything down the road, but what I have found historically is that companies are far better at sales and promises on the front end than their back-end customer service. A lot of the reviews bear that out. But only time will tell, and so far so good!...... I have given a 4 because in this day and age, the buying process for most companies is easy and not unusual.

I have purchased travel insurance a number on times in the past, but I have never have filed a claim in the past but probably should have on one or occassions in the past. Since I had not traveled because of covid the last 2 years I went online to see what travel insurance was the best rated vs just using the company I had used in the past.
