Overall Rating: 3.8 / 5 (Very good)

Generali scored high with us because, as travel insurers go, they offer some of the most comprehensive coverages, highest payout maximums, and many additional policy features other providers don't.

All standard trip interruption and cancelation reasons are provided for, and then some. Additionally, the company has generous provisions for baggage and trip delays. Generali really shines when it comes to its traveler assistance services.

Along with all the usual customer assistance features, the company also makes provision for such things as specialty food delivery, an emergency cash advance of $500, and travel companion meet and greet services. Pound for pound, one of the most extensive offerings out there.

Generali Global Assistance Plans & Coverage

Coverage - 3.8 / 5

Generali offers some of the highest payout maximums in travel insurance coverage of the plans we evaluate.

The company will cover up to a whopping $250,000 max for medical care, and up to $1 million for emergency medical transportation. There are three plan levels that, aside from a few items, only differ in maximum payouts for certain coverages.

The Standard (cheapest) plan only differs in that it won't provide reimbursement for sporting equipment damage or delay, and only provides accidental death & dismemberment coverage if injured in an air flight accident.

Generali also stands out in the trip interruption/cancellation category. They will reimburse up to 175% the cost of the trip due to trip interruption, and also provide a generous $1,000 travel delay reimbursement. If you purchase the premium plan, the coverage kicks in after a mere 6-hour delay.

Generali, unique among travel insurers, also provides trip cancelation coverage in the event of sickness/death of a service animal. In addition to all the standard trip cancellation reasons, the company also includes coverage if you are unable to get a vaccination necessary for travel, and coverage if you have to cancel due to notification of a successful organ match.

Some additional coverages of note include optional rental care damage coverage, up to $10,000 to transport a companion to your bedside if you are under emergency medical care, and reimbursement for unauthorized use of credit cards.

Your denial of my claim just shows that everyone else associated with my planned trip stood up and did the right thing even though a Pandemic wasn’t in their normal scope or policy, while you as the insurer copped out and hid behind your inadequate policy coverage. Essentially you sold me a totally worthless policy and kept my money. The least you could have done is refunded my money for Pandemic not being covered---like I was suppose to know it was going to happen and bought the policy regardless. Wow! You have just lost a customer for life and being a resident of a 6800 residence retirement community with thousands of travelers taking multiple trips a year, I will be sure to post... Read More

We’re sorry the coverage you purchased on TravelInsurance.com didn’t meet your expectation. As stated in our policy documents, our plans only reimburse for non-refundable, pre-paid trip costs if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason. Generali Global Assistance plans do not offer coverage if you cancel your trip due to fear of traveling due to Coronavirus, unless you added Trip Cancellation for Any Reason coverage. It is important that you review your Description of Coverage, which are available before and after your purchase. We take the claims process very seriously and want our customers to make informed choices when purchasing travel insurance. We remain focused on supporting you and fully understand why many travelers are choosing to postpone their trips until more is known about the spread and impact of COVID-19. Therefore, we are, as a special accommodation and in the interest of serving our customers in this crisis, allowing customers who were to depart on their trip between January 29 and June 30, 2020, to receive a voucher in the amount of the insurance that you paid.

This company has failed to even contact me about a claim I filed over 42 days ago. Our company shut their doors and we needed to file a cancellation claim. I have uploaded all information. The claim has not even been assigned a claims representative.

Hello Laurinda. I'm very sorry for the delay. Under normal circumstance, the process can take up to 30 days, however, this timeline is extended due to the current volume we are experiencing. We understand your claim has now been paid. We appreciate your business.

Generali sold me a trip insurance policy on Jan. 24, when you know their actuaries knew COVID was a looming threat. They should never have sold me this policy, and stopped selling the one I bought shortly after I bought it. I get that standard insurance policies don't cover for COVID, but Generali then completely invalidated my insurance policy in an email on March 19 because of the pandemic. Invalidating my policy means I can't file a claim, right? I couldn't reach anyone on the phone, so I took to social media to complain, after which one of their execs called to tell me I was eligible to apply for an "exception request" to get a refund because I don't plan to, and actually... Don't waste your money on this travel insurance. I bought travel insurance through their subsidiary, CSA. My flights were canceled due to flight reductions resulting from COVID 19. The company has refused to refund my money and has only offered to give me a credit for the price of the insurance in the form of a voucher for future travel. This is even more meaningless as I will not be traveling anytime soon and I certainly would not by their travel insurance again. Claim 20027974-01

We’re sorry the coverage didn’t meet your expectation. Similar to other types of insurance you may have, travel insurance doesn't cover everything. Coverages are listed in you policy’s Description of Coverage/Insurance Policy and our plans only reimburse for non-refundable, pre-paid trip costs if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason. While there are many covered reasons in our plans, unfortunately, cancellation of an event is not a covered event under this policy. The DOT recently announced some guidelines on airline ticket refund obligations. This is the parent company of CSA Travel insurance - offered through VRBO. This company refused to refund a single penny of my canceled vacation costs after being forced to cancel because of COVID19. Why do we purchase travel insurance, if not to cover unexpected things like COVID????? in the refusal letter, i was told that canceling due to COVID or fear of infection was not a covered reason to cancel and therefore they refused my claim. What about "stay at home" orders????????????? EXTREMELY disappointed in VRBO for promoting this disreputable company.

We are sorry to hear the Vrbo plan coverage didn't meet your expectations. We design our plans with today's travelers in mind, keeping the cost within reason and providing coverage for the main reasons you may have to cancel. Unfortunately, like other insurance plans you have, travel insurance cannot cover everything. The plan you purchased includes a variety of covered events under which we can may provide coverage if you are forced to cancel your trip, but it does not cover pandemics or epidemics. While you may have already reached out to your Vrbo host, you may want to revisit their site as Vrbo is asking their hosts to apply refunds and credits. In the event that your host won't comply, Vrbo is waiving fees and we are offering reuse of your policy. This company denied our claim for down payment reimbursement for a trip cancelled due to the pandemic. The reason for a valid claim had to be an "enforced quarantine". Never mind that nothing is open at our destination (restaurants, bars, parks, etc). READ THE FINE PRINT! Coverage always favors the company ... not you. Will probably never buy travel insurance again. Not worth the paper its written on.

This company is terrible. I called to cancel my insurance because the airline/cruise companies cancelled the trip due to the covid-19 pandemic. I have sent emails (no response). When you call, you never get to speak to a human being. I was finally told by a recording that my policy could not be cancelled. The recording became garbled when the supposed reason was given. I won't be using them again. Go with a reputable company. I would give a negative rating if possible.

you can not get any customer service. I have called and left a phone number twice when they were still providing that option, I have sat on hold at least three times for long period of time only to be disconnected by them, and I have written at least three emails with a simple request. I am immunocompromised and cancelled my trip to Hilton Head too late to get a refund from VRBO. I understand them not covering the insurance not covering covid but all I need from them is a letter stating it will not be covered so I can file with my credit card. But I can't get that--no money from them just assistance. But no one will respond. Will I ever use them again, no way.

I paid $3,839.50 for a condo in New Orleans and had to cancel and even had a note from my doctor. This happened last month during the Coronavirus and they only want to give me a voucher for $236.13 which is BS. I called early last month and was told on the phone they may not be able to honor the policy because it was purchased after January 29 and I should have known about the virus. We DID NOT know about the virus and neither did they because they sold me the policy! Legal counsel has been contacted! NEVER WILL I PURCHASE INSURANCE AGAIN NOR WILL I RENT FROM HOMEAWAY!

Rich San Diego, California 3/12/20 We had a cruise planned for the middle of March that went to New Zealand, Tasmania and Australia. A month earlier I was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma on my nose which required my surgeon to use the MOHS procedure to remove skin and tissue down to my cartilage. Due to the procedure and pending subsequent skin graft and care, we had to cancel our trip. Generali was great at answering all my questions and providing a way to print out the necessary forms to file a cancellation claim. Unfortunately, my calls to them were being made at the same time others were calling regarding their insurance and the coronavirus. Yes, I did not get through to... Read More
