Our Overall Rating: 4.6 / 5 (Excellent)

Choice Home Warranty offers a full array of home appliance and systems coverage at a competitive price. The company offers two plans for existing home owners —Basic and Total. In addition to a monthly premium, customers can expect to pay an $85 service fee each time they make a claim, which falls in low-to-mid range when compared to other home warranty companies.

You can submit a claim 24/7, including holidays, via phone, online, or app. The company utilizes proprietary technology to begin the dispatching process after a claim is filed. The company has recently updated their plans increasing coverage and has fewer limitations. Their plans and optional coverage can cover over 25 major systems and appliances.

Choice Home Warranty earns a B rating from the Better Business Bureau and has a positive rating on Trustpilot, but in this industry, negative customer reviews far outnumber positive ones.

Coverage Options - 4.5 / 5

Choice Home Warranty offers existing homeowners two plans, each of which cover a mix of systems and appliances. The primary difference between its Total plan and its Basic plan is that refrigerators, washers and dryers, and air conditioning systems are not included in the Basic Plan. Optional coverage for such items as pools and spas, well pumps, and septic systems is available for an additional fee. The company states that, in any case, its total liability for any single item is capped at $3000, but lower limits do apply to some covered items.

We requested a quote for a single family home of less than 5000 square feet in a small midwestern city. The premium for Choice Home Warranty's Basic was $47.85 per month and the premium for its Total pan was $54.95 per month. With the cost difference between the two plans being only about $7 per month, to our mind, the Total plan a better value overall because it includes coverage for three of the most common appliances: refrigerators, washers, and dryers. It also includes coverage for air conditioning systems.

The company's co-pay for a service call is $85, slightly less than most comparable companies. The co-pay may be reduced further with special discounts and promotions.

Two different sales guys lied to me about maximum payouts for replacement of appliances and services. For example, they told me that if my refrigerator needs replaced they will replace it with the same exact model if still available or a comparable one without a cap. I told both of them that I had a Consumer Affairs article in front of me that specifies that they have a $1500 cap. They both told me that the article was incorrect and that I will have that in writing in the contract when I sign up. Once I agreed to terms and gave them my credit card number, I got the contract via email. The Consumer Affairs report was accurate and they lied. I cancelled the next day. Now they’re telling... I had a tech come out on Nov. 6th and told me my furnace needed a new ā€œmother boardā€. I’m sure he let CHW know his results about the furnace. I texted (emailed) CHW about what the next step is and haven’t heard anything back from them as of today, November 8th. Can someone please let me know what the next step is as it gets pretty cold in here when the furnace doesn’t go on. Thanks, Donna

So far I am a little frustrated that the plumbing problem I called about was not what the plumber who was coming to fix it could fix. I called and got another plumber scheduled, so I am hopeful this will turn out OK. Amelia was very helpful.

First time we had to use Choice service and we were very satisfied. Technician arrived on time, diagnosed the problem with our heat pump very quickly, and came back with the parts when he said he would. Problem solved. Thanks.

I’ve never had this kind of protection, but thought I’d check it out. I called in my first claim and it was denied because it was a plumbing issue at the meter box on our side. I’m sure it’s in the paperwork somewhere.....it was easy to call it in; however, I believe they use a Call Center (as many company’s do), but I would have preferred to talk with someone who was more informed about the company. She had to go ask someone if it was covered. I also had difficulty understanding the young girl, and she seemed to be having difficulties understanding me. I’m was sorry to experience that Personal help, with a very knowledgeable person, is becoming a thing of the past.
