Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Have paid dues for 10+ yrs in a 24 year old house. Had not had many problems with AHS for small repairs. The website is very friendly to use and helpful and you can see the contract terms there. Have used them several times: 4 years ago, two water heaters needed to be replaced, AHS replaced them and all went well, but I paid contractor their "up to code" charge, not covered, few hundred out the door. 2 years ago had HVAC problems. Multiple technicians, visits and 6 weeks without air, we agreed to a "cash out" option with AHS, we paid for two new HVAC units installed, few thousands out the door. Now having pool problems and running down the same road as the AC's. Phone calls, holds... Read More

Unfortunately we've had very bad experiences with two properties now... having to cancel both policies due to a complete lack of customer service and execution. It's not uncommon to have to talk with outside services and mostly receiving conflicting information from American Home Shield thus requiring multiple attempts to schedule service calls and repairs. Our most recent experience was an HVAC issue, we scheduled a repair person to come and they did nothing but wiggle some cords around and reactivated the system stating no issue was found... that was $75. A week later same issue again and the wait time to speak to AHS representative was too long to consider so we hired an outside... Read More

hello, i have bad experience right now. I called for issue in my dryer on June 17th 2020. Person from Sears came next day to check the dryer which was very quick service BUT after that i have called 10 times & staying on the phone for over 30 hours on hold and still on July 6th issue has not been resolved. I have contacted Sears and they send me the email that my dryer cannot be fixed and they have informed American Home Shield but AHS keep on saying that they have not gotten any response. I have to go to Laundrymatt every week twice in this corona envoirment. Please help asap. Poor service on this one so far. 20 days and counting. Hoping to get resolution asap.

We have had a policy for over three years on our house. Our realtor bought the policy for us when we purchased this home and we have renewed every year. This policy has paid for itself over and over again. The service is fast and professional. If an item can't be fixed they have paid for the replacement while we've paid only our service call fee. We have had to replace a water heater, refrigerator, heating/cooling system, etc. Each time American Home Shield has been there for us. We have had things repaired and the contractors have all been great. We don't ever want to be without our policy.

Go home tonight, turn off ur refrigerator. Wait 3-4 weeks and turn it back on. Although I finally heard word earlier this week. It's gonna take time to have it shipped here. So I will have no unit for 5 weeks. I called and called, waiting on one call one hour and 20 minutes. The other calls averaged 30-45 minutes. It appears u can no longer carry ur case load. Think about it, u took to long for replacement. No refridge for weeks and weeks. I finally bought a mini fridge for ice and etc. I am 76 and I was exhausted trying to get this solved. There final determination was fair, dragged 10 days from notice I needed a replacement. BTW I still do not have a refer

Have used AHS for more than 10 years. Never had any problems with the contractors they use. Setting up a request for service on line is easy and convenient since you can do that 24/7. Several years ago had a full replacement of a washing machine that was covered. Also a very easy process. Good value for those on a budget, as most service calls are at least $75 plus parts and labor where as AHS it is a set price for your annual coverage and a set price for your service call depending on which plan you choose.

I put in a request for my fridge, technician came out stated would put in for it to be replaced..it will be a week tomorrow not a call from them. I called them several times this week on hold for over and hour each call Finally got someone on the phone transferred to appliance purchase department on hold for over a hour again ... starting to think no one works in that department.. this company is a rip off

I tried calling AHS to file a claim - could not get through to a person after holding for over 45 minutes. Went on-line and entered my information and requested A/C repair and paid the $75 copay. Reported on a Thursday afternoon - was not able to get the AHS contracted company to come fix the problem until the following Tuesday. Tried calling AHS on 3 additional occasions - NEVER spoke to a person. On hold minimum of 35 minutes and hung up. We were without A/C in Florida for 5 days. This is totally unacceptable; however, we were never able to report this to the company and possibly get another contractor because no one answers the phone. I was very disappointed with the length of... Read More

My first time making a claim and Im questioning my choice of going with American Home Shield. Up until now I've had no complaints. My microwave door has broken, they sent out a repairman who put in that it should be replaced. Well 5 days later and still no word from AHS. So I reached out to them. I've been on hold for over an hour. I find it very frustrating that I cant even talk to someone about a service that I pay them for! I bet if my payment was late they would be calling me back to back. My major concern is, what if this was something major like the a/c or fridge that was broken. would we be in the house for days and weeks without while I play phone tag and the waiting game?...
