Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Don't use AHS. I have yet again been underhanded by this company. I am so sick of the crap products they use to replace what I had. I had high end ac, water heater, etc and EVERY time they replace with the lowest least efficiency product they can find. This company does not even care when a client is a disabled American Air Force veteran. They should not be allowed to use the name AMERICAN in their name for the disrespect they have for Americans

Soooo dissatisfied with this company! Placed a work order for stove and washer yesterday; meant to add dryer (similar issues). Unable to amend anything online. Service tech called and came out quickly (within 3 hours of placing order), spoke limited English and was super silent on my questions (frustrating!) Simple questions such as "What's wrong with appliance? What does error code mean?" When I asked about dryer, he said I'd have to pay another $100; told him I wanted to add to this work order and would contact company to have it added. I think he looked at dryer (not sure; he's super silent - zero communication skills). Thinking it would be simple to call and amend existing work... Read More

If I could give this company negative stars, I absolutely would. This company does whatever it can to avoid paying money for applicances that need to be fixed. Our AC went out and we didn't have a technician come out for a week, even though it clearly started in our contract they have 48 hours. After sending the first company, we were told it wouldn't be able to be fixed for TWO WEEKS because we are not in their service area and we got bumped to the back of the list. That was unacceptable because I have a 10 month old baby who I refuse to force sleep in sweltering heat. AHS decided to send another company who could fit us in sooner (after calling them several times and waiting on hold for... Read More

Worst company ever. Hold times are NEVER less than 45 minutes and then, many times, you are disconnected as soon as someone finally picks up. This company has owed me $1854.99 for over 45 days and they are using every damned excuse under the sun to not reimburse me. They keep claiming they haven't gotten the invoices, yet I have proof from USPS that it was delivered twice and an email that I sent and shows it went through. I'm going back to First American......they were better by a landslide!

Placed an order for AC repair (unit not cooling) May, 2017. Waited several days before agent came (Cabot Mechanical LLC not recommended). Finally came, did not explain repairs, collected service fee and left. August, 2017 unit still not cooling sufficiently. Called and placed another request for service and was told would have to pay ANOTHER service fee. They sure don't have any problem collecting premiums.

The plumbing company should have come from my home city, where there are people we know better. Not from outside of my city. I got 2 notices that the fee was not paid and it HAS to be paid up front or no one will even look at the problem. The people could not fix the problem and really did not seem to care. The people also would say the first guy who came out had moved suddenly to Oklahoma at the same time they were putting me on hold so they could see when he could come back out as the second guy messed up the first guys work to slow the running leak??? AHS told me different stories as well as to things and no one seem to be on the same page at all. The wait to get to AHS phone was... Read More

My first service call experience with American Home Shield was unfortunately negative and I would not recommend AHS based on this. I had a plumbing issue (washer drainage causing back-up in home) and part of the assigned plumbers recommendation was to place a scope in the drainage system to see if there was a blockage. When he called AHS for authority to do this, he was denied which meant we had to pay htis amount (@$250) out of pocket. Additionally, I tried to discuss this with AHS after the fact and they have absolutely no way to e-mail them with questions or feedback and when you call them, the hold time is at least 60+ minutes. I do not recommend American Home Shield.
