Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

AHS has provided service for us on several occasions. The companies that have come to the house are courteous and knowledgeable. I would choose to have them back at any time. Our only concern is the time it takes for any event. Everything is done on line and then we wait for a company to contact us for an appointment. There has been one occasion where the company they referred never responded and it took several days to get someone else to come out. We have had little success in reaching a person to talk with at AHS unless we endure being on hold for over an hour. It would be very helpful, seeing they do not want to have phone reps, to have a virtual assistant for chats so we could get... Read More

I was hesitant to renew my warranty with American Home Shield after my free trial had ended. Shortly after I renewed, my air conditioner went out. Living in south Texas, AC is not a luxury, it's a necessity as temperatures reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit quite often. I was so glad I had renewed my warranty because the quotes to fix the unit were $600-$900. I called American Home Shield and the got someone over, and I only paid the $75 deductible. The timeframe for someone to come repair my unit left something to be desired as it took two days to get someone out, but overall, I was pleased with the experience. I would recommend a warrant to others.

I bought the house in end of March and the seller bought the home warranty. Since June I have been having a problem in my AC drain line. It is blocked and the drain pan is overflowing. I called AHS and they assigned a AC company. They came and could not solve the problem and said that I might need a plumber. I called the AHS customer service and was on hold for may be one hour. I inform what the AC guy said and the girl said that I will receive a call from AHS after they contact the AC company. I waited for may be more than a week and call the AHS customer service again and was on hold for more than one hour. Finally I got to talk to a person and she said that she will send a AC guy to... I have been a customer for 3 years now. One vendor charged the $75 fee even when they didn't do any service and I never signed off anything. Since then I've been trying to get a hold of someone to clarify this issue to over 2 months. I couldn't submit any new service request with out paying that $75. I've been lucky one out of every 10 times trying to speak to customer care after waiting each time over an hour. Even when I finally get someone on the phone, they put me back in the waiting line or disconnect the call. The worst service ever in my life for this company. No respect for customers at all.

I've had American Home Shield for 2 years now and out of the last 4 repair men to come to my home only 1 was reputable. The others tried to over charge me dispite my contract agreed amount. When I called customer service about the incidents 3 times they put me on a 15 minute hold and then hung up on me. American Home Shield offers better contracts than most but I am afraid of the repairman whenever I have to use them.

I would give no stars. Poor communication. lack of customer care. My first claim.was denied. It took weeks of trying to contact AHS to find that out. The only reason I finally got ahold of somebody was because the plumbing company gave me a dispatch phone number . Otherwise I spent days on hold or was disconnected. Finally when I reached somebody I was told by one person it was covered what I needed. Then one hour later I received the call telling me it was not covered. So basically I paid 37.99 a for nothing. Also you can't do anything for the first month no claims. I paid $75 just to have someone tighten my toilet. When I tried to cancel my policy after 4 months. I was told they don't... Read More
