Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I've just had the worst customer experience with any company or service to date. I called Saturday to submit a service issue for a non-working air conditioner. The service agent took my payment over the phone and told me it would be 24 hours before the service was scheduled. I received a text from a provider saying they would contact me in 24 hours. I did not receive anything and called American Home Shield. After being disconnected from their service line 3 times, I finally was able to speak to "Chet" who told me the service was transferred to another provider and it would be another 24 hours before anything was scheduled. I told him this needed to be escalated, as it is their... Read More

I think this co. is a scam I had this for a few years and every thing I had repaired you wouldn't cover so my out of pocket was really high. Just seems like a waste of money.

I now have 4 years of experience with AHS, first 3 years were no problem, this will be my last year! First off, whether you make a claim online or over the phone, expect to wait at least 2 days to get connected with a contractor, or sit on hold for at least an hour while making the claim...and their systems are ALWAYS down. I was told I could schedule my own vendor for A/C when they couldn't get anyone sooner. Went through all the right steps and am only getting reimbursed $44. They are telling me I'm getting $119 back, but then they deduct $75 out of my account for the "service call", so the net amount I'm getting back is $44, they don't seem to get that. I paid $196 out of pocket bottom... Read More

I purchased hoe warranty with them. They charged me more than cost price. During service call they asked me to pay the service call plus Freon price less $10. I cancelled service order. They cancelled my contract. I am unable to locate check they sent. I have called them four times regarding this. Each time it is 4 minutes to an hour. I am still on my fifth call trying to resolve this. This is true account. Buyer beware. I am yet to get my money back. They charged me for processing fee as well. Horrible, horrible company

The consumer Advocates rating is fraudulent! There is no way in God's name that American Home Shield has a 9.8 rating and a 10/10 for reputation! They are one of the worst home warranty companies doing buisness today. If you can call it that. They take your money and NEVER pay for a thing. As an attorney, I understand contracts. I have thoroughly read each and every word of American Home Shield's warranty. Yet, they would do everything they could to deny every claim. A couple of employees verified this on the phone. They went as far to say how much they hated their jobs and didn't care if they were fired. They just wanted customers to know what was really happening. Just like health... Read More

This company is a joke. My A/C unit has been out since Friday 8/27/2018, they were to rush the work order today is Wed and still nothing. I have a leak in the A/C unit which destroyed by mother board and motor they will not cover due to leaking. Why have them if they are not going to fix it. They sure know how to take your money every month and not repair anything.

After requesting service for my A/C breakdown on 5/16/18, the contractor assigned to me went unresponsive to my calls for repair for 8 days. I then found another contractor that completed the repair, and sent an invoice to AHS (dba HSA) for the repair. They then began sending notices in the mail stating that my claim would not be covered due to a "pre-existing condition." My blower motor did NOT breakdown due to a pre-existing condition. It has worked perfectly for over 5 months since the day we moved in, evidenced by its performance in both heating and cooling up until the day of breakdown. My entire HVAC system has not had any malfunctions whatsoever prior to the motor breakdown on... Read More
