Our Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I have been a loyal Healthy Paws Pet Insurance customer since 2019, when my beagle Maisie was just 5 months old, and I’ve always hoped never to need it. However, this past month, Maisie, who is now 5 years old, gave us quite a scare. She ended up in both our regular vet and emergency care for fluid on her heart and in her belly. Thankfully, Healthy Paws made the claims process straightforward, and they quickly reimbursed me for her treatment. One recommendation I would give to new policyholders is to proactively submit all your dog’s medical records each time they visit the vet. Healthy Paws requires all records to process the first payout, and that did cause a slight delay in my case.... Read More

Over the past year, we have faced multiple pet emergencies, and I can confidently say that without Healthy Paws, our pets wouldn’t be as happy and healthy as they are today. Their support during some truly difficult times has been invaluable. Filing claims has been incredibly easy, and reimbursement has always been prompt. More importantly, the peace of mind that comes with knowing we can focus on getting the best care for our pets—without the overwhelming financial stress—has made all the difference. I sincerely hope no one has to go through traumatic injuries like we have, but if you ever find yourself in that position, you’ll be grateful to have a company like Healthy Paws by your... I highly recommend and refer people to Healthy Paws for insurance for their furry loved ones. I recently had to take my cat to the ER for a urinary blockage and it was a very stressful and expensive process. The only good part of this entire experience was how quickly and effortless it was to submit my claims and for them to be processed and reimbursed without any unneeded conversations or disputes. Healthy Paws even checked in after everything to see how my cat was doing. I wish Healthy Paws could cover my personal medical insurance too, that's how much of a satisfied customer I am!

All of our pets are covered through Healthy Paws, and it has been a literal life saver for my kitten, who was recently diagnosed with a serious, life-threatening illness. The treatment has been very expensive, but thanks to our coverage, we don’t have to worry so much about the cost of the necessary treatments, and can just focus on getting my kitten well again. In addition to the peace of mind, their customer service has been excellent. I have recommended Healthy Paws to friends and family.

STAY AWAY. I used to rave about Healthy Paws, and had a wonderful experience with them with my first cat, so much so that I got my mom and several friends on a plan. Now that I got my 2nd cat insured with them it seems there have been major changes in their customer service and claims team, and I have been truly appalled by lack of customer care, being bounced around from one person to the next with my claims being denied with no real explanation, or explanations that don't make sense based on their own policy. I have lost track of the amount of different people I've spoken to who have told me different things, and feel truly disrespected as a customer. Unfortunately cannot recommend at... Read More

We chose Healthy Paws pet insurance on the recommendation of a friend and we're so glad we did! We did our due diligence and compared several pet insurance plans before choosing Healthy Paws for their illness/accident plan. It's an affordable plan that offers enough coverage to really make a difference when unexpected emergencies arise. We can cover routine yearly exams and medications, but this plan gives us an extra level of comfort if our pup should become ill or is injured in an accident. As luck would have it our 6 month old puppy became ill with a stomach issue that required an ultrasound and overnight stay in the hospital. It was crazy expensive but Healthy Paws came through with... Read More

I feel so fortunate to have Healthy Paws insuring the health of my little Chihuahua mix, Millie. She is 12.5 years old and has needed 3 surgeries, all of which have been completely covered by my Healthy Paws policy. When I file my claims they respond very quickly, and with compassion. After my claim is filed (and reimbursed) they never fail to follow up with questions regarding Millie's well-being. I recommend them highly and with gratitude.

As pet owners, we all want the best for our furry companions, and for us, that includes making sure our dog is covered in case of unexpected health issues. Our eight-year-old chocolate lab is a beloved member of our family, and thanks to Healthy Paws Pet Insurance, we've been able to focus on his care rather than worrying about the financial side of things. We've had to use our Healthy Paws coverage twice over the years, and both experiences have been nothing short of exceptional. Their customer service team is friendly, knowledgeable, and always willing to go the extra mile. In both instances, they quickly verified our coverage and provided us with much-needed reassurance about what... Read More

Healthy paws consistently reimburses in a timely manner. In the 9 years that I've been with them, they've never denied a claim that should be paid and claims a typically paid within days. Additionally, monthly charges go up as the pets age, but the rates have never increased because of the numbers of claims. Highly recommed!
